Because of the method I'm using to break in the motor. After the initial start up of the motor, I will not be turning the car off until it is broken in, so it requires me to drive it. Which is why I need brakes.

I'm using the Dyno Breakin Method on the street. Probably with 2nd and/or 3rd gear to stay as close as I can to the speed limit.

Do Three 1/2 Throttle runs from
40% - 60% of your engine's max rpm
Let it Cool Down For About 15 Minutes

Do Three 3/4 Throttle runs from
40% - 80% of your engine's max rpm
Let it Cool Down For About 15 Minutes

Do Three Full Throttle runs from
30% - 100% of your engine's max rpm
Let it Cool Down For About 15 Minutes

When coming off the Throttle in each step, you should let the engine brake the car vs using the brakes to slow you down.

Change the Oil, and drive!

This was one of the most confusing part of my build, knowing what is the best way to break it in. I went with the same method, drive it how it was built to be drive with alot of engine braking.

Very impressed with your build. Always loved your car, and this is the icing on the cake. Can't wait to see some numbers and videos. Good luck man!

Awesome build ! I just picked up my 5.5 and I'm just doing the basic bolt on stuff. I am curious to see the end results (Time Slips, Area under the curve) because I have very similar goals. Congratulations !

That would be my 275 tires in the rear. I've been rolling the fenders the past 2 days, but I guess I need to work on it some more. I hope to get rid of that soon.

It was second gear, not third. Remember? I did not want to get caught doing 90+mph on 521, so I didn't use third gear for the 100% RPM stage of the break-in.

I'm an idiot, thanks for clarifying. Why did I think it was turd gear?

Fixed.

Drive it to football tonight, I want to see it. Should be pretty nasty once you throw some timing at it.

i so want to see some dyno runs to see how worth it it is to build our maxima VQ35DE motors. This project has already started for me...but i want to see if i should stop or continue buying parts.

like, can you really feel the difference now compared to modding like a 240 or something?

There is definitely a big difference in performance. How much? Unknown until she is tuned and placed on the dyno. Compared to a 240 or the like? Don't know, I've never modded one or been in one that has been before or after. I don't have a comparison for you, but I will have results once everything is completed and measured.

I "should" have a baseline dyno soon which will only be a base air/fuel tune so that I can at least drive her around with steady idle and a flat 13.5 a/f without worrying about it dying on me at every light. After the 1500miles, then I will tune the hell out of it while adding the bigger MAF, 380cc injectors, extended rev limiter, and much more timing. Then we'll see how much of a difference and how true this build will shine.

Stay tuned, she's still having minor things buttoned up to make her a daily driver.

Car sounds great in the vids.

How do the cams sound at idle or is it stalling out at idle?

Thanks man.

From the engine compartment, I want to say that the motor sounds pretty close to stock. She does idle, when I play with the accelerator a little to get to that catch point. When that happens, the cam's loop can be heard via the 3" exhaust which really sounds good. With this motor the exhaust has a much deeper bass now in turn making it louder as the bass resonates. I'll have to get an idle sound clip soon. Might do this during the a/f tune at the dyno.

Do you know what the a/f ration is now? How's the low end? Is there any traction with the hlsd or does it spin like crazy with all that power?

My wideband is hooked up and ready to go, but the o2 needs a bung welded in the y-pipe. I won't know what the a/f is until that happens, which I will tune at least the a/f at that time to 13.5 flatline. HLSD helps more with cornering and slip, but I only hit it once in 1st gear that night, and it was basically non existent. Lowend is a pig without a tune at the moment, but will be fixed. I'm also running the Fidanza flywheel and a shorter FD gear.

It is.

It's the 9500ix with GPS. It's the sickest one I have owned. I'm Escort loyal, and have had 3 models in the past. Got this one for my birthday last year, and absolutely love it. Lives up to all the hype and the price as well.

Congrats Deckdout2 on firing the beast up and the first video is nice! Moar vids!

How does it compare from before the build in terms of pulling from 2nd gear? Butt dyno?

Can't wait to see some great dyno numbers for the best 5.5 N/A build to date!!

It's hard to tell since for 1, I haven't driven her in 5 months, and second she's untuned at the moment, so she's still jumpy before 5k at full throttle. After 5k she opens wide for me.

Sorry I don't have much to give you guys at the moment until I get it tuned. I will have more of a results post after that occurs.

I have yet to post in this thread, better late than never.

I'll be honest...even without a tune this car is nasty. Once it gets out of the bottom end, the thing just screams (as you can see by the vid).

Good job and congrats again P, cant wait to do the photo shoot...these guys have no idea.
