OK so I got my new motor that im putting in. The valve springs that I ordered will arrive in 2 weeks as its being shipped with an oil pump thats on backorder. Now, do I put the motor in and then do the valve springs or is it that much easier and worth the wait to do it when the motor is not in.
Ohh I also got headers coming which I herd is a real PITA to isntall.

Most definitely do it with engine OUT. It makes life much easier... not to mention that you save yourself plenty hassle trying that rear header AND also you wont make your lower back swell up from all the leaning over the fenders and radiator support when doing the f'ing rear head's valve springs. Do yourself a favor and do it OUTside lol

I used a 14mm socket and a hammer. You put the socket on top of the retainer and hit it with a hammer. It should pop the retainer locks out, valve will slide down and the spring comes off.
edit: by hit, I mean tap. The purpose of doing this is to compress the spring so the lock comes out of the valve shaft and retainer guide.

Hard to argue against this tool, regardless of the price. Me and 95blkmax went halfsies on this bad boy and it's worth it's money even if you use it once.

I just wanted to step in here real quick and give JWT major props on this tool. I've heard that it could be cumbersome using various methods to remove the valvesprings, and hands down this is the best one I've ever used, given I've never used anything else or removed valvesprings before. I tackled this task this evening to find that it is very easy to do. The heads were off the motor so that might have made a difference in pushing the valves back up to give more room to remove the retaining locks, but still a simple and effective tool I must say. I'm pleased to have done this with such ease and without any assistance. To others, this might be second nature but that's not the point of this post. It's to share my experience as a 1st time valvespring remover and the effectiveness of this tool. Thanks again JWT, and I highly recommend this product. Worth every penny I spent on it.
Also, for those of you removing the valve springs on a bench...
Put a clean bundled up rag inside the combustion chamber. Otherwise, you can risk the valve dropping onto the bench and bending or flattening the lip etc.
