Kevin's VQ35 Cam Build

Hey everyone I'm Kevin and don't exactly have a Maxima but have the motor . It's a 2002 SE-R Spec V with the 5.5gen VQ35DE swap. It's been in the car for about 2 years and now I'm getting ready to work on a build. Wanted to set up a thread to get some feedback and what not or to show other what they may be interested in doing to their motors.

Everything is on order and on the way for my build. I'll be upgrading some parts while I'm in there as well.

Last dynoed at 250hp/268tq.

Short Block :
Wiseco 96MM (.020 over) 11:1 High Comp Pistons
Eagle H Beam Rods and ARP Rod Bolts
ACL Thrust Washers/ACL Rod Race Bearings/ACL Main Race Bearing Set
350z HR Head Gaskets (need the machine work done for compatibility, shouldn't be very difficult a shop did it for a Z owner for around $80) (better coolant flow)
ARP L19 Head Studs and ARP Main Studs
350z Revvup Oil Pump (stronger)
OEM Gasket Set
Machine work to bore/hone and balance everything. With zero balancing the underdrive pulley etc.

Heads :
JWT C-2 Cams and JWT Valve Springs/Retainers
Headwork = Full port job maximizing flow
M2 Serdi Valve Job - 3 angle cut

(These flow numbers are before the serdi valve job, so expect an even larger increase in CFM 10-18CFM more should I have flowed the heads after, we just ran out of time the car is already almost done being reassembled!)

Stock - 188.8 @ .200"
281.2 @ .500"

Ported - 228.9 @ .200"
318.7 @ .500"

About a 37.5 CFM gain, which should be around 50hp on the top end and you can see there 40.1 CFM gain on the low. So if each CFM = around 1.4 HP you can see that the headwork alone will post around a 50hp increase

Intake setup: Intake manifold full ported, & SSIM done.

Tuning : Standalone

Misc :
JWT Flywheel
Unorthodox Racing Crank Pulley Underdrive
NGK Iridium Spark Plugs
6th Gen Maxima (2004-2008) Replacement Valve Covers (these help prevent a vacuum/oil leak over the 02-03 valve covers)
Walbro 190 Fuel Pump (already installed)
JWT Clutch (already installed)
NWP Thermal Intake Manifold Spacers (already installed)
Exhaust, Headers, Cold Air Intake (already there)

Nigel at Premiere Performance in Pembroke Pines will be doing the assembly
Larry at South Florida Crank will do all the machine work.

Here is what it looks like as is.

Goals : To achieve as much HP as possible on the VQ35DE motor! Way above the 300HP range with the tuning =).

If you're going to be running the Utec, why would you waste your money on the Technosquare reflash? The Utec is capable of doing what you need and more.

I'm also a little skeptical about 300whp without rods, pistons, and headwork to increase your compression to hit your mark. There's only a handful that has hit it N/A on my350z, and they had upgraded rods, pistons, and headwork.

I have similar goals in mind, but my component list is a little longer. Good luck!

UTEC doesn't adjust the ignition and VTC maps which is a limiting factor.

There's a maxima guy that posted 275whp with less mods than me and no cams with the UTEC and TS flash. I'm adding the UR underdrive pulley, NWP spacers, removed the VIAS, will most likely get the SSIM since I'll be revving higher and am adding a pretty aggressive cam. Anyways I'll post the results when I'm done I don't know if I'd hit 300whp exactly but it's worth taking a shot at without diving into my pocket to get pistons rods etc. So we shall see

My current mods are the JWT clutch, Custom Headers, Custom Y-Pipe, 2.5 catless exhaust system, CAI, Spec V gears, Ported IM. With those mods I put down 250whp/268 tq. No tuning or anything done yet so I'll see if I can push it over 300! Woot. I'll definitely be close if I don't

I'm also going to be advancing the timing to 17* as well.

Umm which guy was that ? I dyno close to there but without the TS , just the UTEC itself.

Which Chris are you talking about ? Crispeed the tuner or another maxima owner ?

Looking forward to see the finshed product.

My buddy Chris has a VQ35 Sentra as well he lives in Boynton Beach, I don't know his forum name on maxima.org he'll probably chime in to say hello soon though. edit - VQpwrdSpeC is Chris.

Puppetmaster was the one who told me about the guy at 275whp. He's got the TS flash and uses a SAFC not the UTEC my bad. I spoke to him a while ago on my build with what I was gona be doing. I think the name was Jay.

Very nice.

Also, I'm in Palm Beach County a lot with my Maxima. I'd definitely like to check out your project when I'm in town. I won't be able to make it down there until after MAXUS 09 though.

We are starting on the build in mid June, so after the flash/tuning and everything I'd say mid July or so since I work full time. That'd be a good eta.

Hello
Rooting for you
And following right behind

I think you will love the feel of those cams
and raised redline
for us it saves a shift to 5th in the ¼

I see you’re due to finish mid July
I might have my alternator in by then [no I’m not laughing]
I need to come visit

Three vq35de sentra's
Oh my

And all above 250hp
Hmmm!

Mine does have the lower end and mild head work done
and Chris's car runs within 2mph [I think] of my 108mph

one more thing
what part number t-stat are you using?

Very nice build, some feedback from my experience. I wouldn't spend the money on getting the UDP. It hasnt proven to be much of a gain to be honest. All it does is dim your lights/weaken your a/c (if you have one) at idle. as far as power, nothing.

Also, a cutout (3" opening) right before your catback will add a few hp's. this is based on 95blkmax's dyno's, I believe he gained about 10hp from opening the cutout alone, or more i think.

Also, another interesting thing you can do that may(should) yield a little power as well, is the "volt boosta" (what we call it lol), basically increase the voltage to the coils to about 16v, and increase the gap of your plugs, giving you a stronger, bigger, spark, better more efficient combustion.

Thanks for the suggestions, I don't have a cat in my exhaust system right now though. Interesting volt mod too. Thanks.

I have the UR underdrive pulley put on already actually, my feedback is that it feels as though it revs up faster. My lights don't dim and my audio system is still beast. I'm running about 700watts RMS through 2 amps 4 way channel speakers and 1 12in sub. So I haven't had any bad results with it. I like it. The weight difference between the stock crank and the UR one is pretty substantial. Could be I notice the difference more cause my vehicles a lot lighter?

As for the cats, yea eddy (95blkmax) didnt have any cats either, however he still got a good amount of power from opening the cutout, Perhaps a 2.5" catback dosent flow enough, but proven fact, open cutout WILL make you more power.

Thats good that the pulley didnt affect your car as much, yea it does rev quicker, but while driving, none of us (3 or 4 of us that did it locally) noticed a difference. U already have it so thats good.

Talk to Grey99 about the volt boost thing, he'll link you to the place that sells the device, or you can look for his thread on it.

I cant wait to see this project done.

It's funny, I live in boynton too, but we never seem to run into each other. You guys should come out to the sonic meet on wednesdays if you dont already do.

Got some parts

Have most of the parts in for the build just waiting on a few others. Here are a few pics with everything laid out.

All the OEM Nissan Parts, including the engine cover that I finally decided to get! Got a real good deal on it for 39.95. Nice snap shot of everything there.

Got the flywheel.

Cams and Valve Springs

Not bad. Have you considered a 96mm bore? Won't cost much more to get pistons that size and a little extra displacement never hurt anything!

Yeah, I ordered Wiseco Pistons 96MM 11:1 and Eagle Rods, figured why not just go the whole way with the build. And you're right they didn't cost that much as a set. That's why I said might as well. Was gona be a surprise post when I get them!
