A while back when I was trying to re-seat by UIM on my drilled A32 LIM, I noticed something odd.

Problem: When you put the UIM bolts in the sleeves they go in, only about 1/2 of the threads stuck out the bottom. Meaning, you were only using half of the threads available on the bolt.

Solution: Grind down the top of the bolt sleeve to allow more threads to come out. All of those problems we have had about the re-drilled threads stripping out, magically GONE!

Heres a picture to explain it; Bolt on the left has an unground sleeve(see how its taller?) and the one on the right is ground down.



These bolts are the same bolts, the only thing thats changed is the sleeve they go in is shorter.

or.....you could just buy longer bolts.

Why would you waste the time/effort/money? Just grind it down and you have a strip-proof LIM.

I would just have get longer bolt though but shaving is a good idea specially if that happend at midnight or on a remote location.

so buying bolts...entails more effort than taking a dremel and grinding down on your manifold?

I agree with double....I'd do it in a desperate situation...but otherwise, logic would tell me "i need longer bolts" not "let me grind down on my intake manifold".

A good idea if you're trying to get her running before class the next day and all the stores are closed, and it'd work fine, but it's definitely a cleaner job to just get extended bolts. Plus, thinner M6 and M8 nissan bolts have weak heads (don't ask me how I know...) so you might as well get a couple nicer ones that won't snap the head when you're torquing them down.
