"V-Manage" Initial Report

So I have owned this gizmo for over a year now and I did try it once with no success, either through a faulty install or a faulty operator. I have searched and searched and have found little if any info on install and results. The one article I did find suggested improvement but a very small one.

I did make a harness out of the connectors I used for my E-Manage Ultimate so I could easily remove and troubleshoot if necessary. I won't bore you with the install because it was just like the EU or UTEC with a lot less wires.

I installed the software did the updates to the latest version and started with the V-Manage switches off because I just wanted to datalog. The sampling map will fill in as you drive with the stock cam advance values. After checking and confirming that the stock map resembled what Dave (Eng92) had recorded and posted last year sometime I decided to take the leap and advance the settings similar to the 350Z stock settings. I tested in 2nd gear from a roll at 20 mph, first stock then 350Z map. I could definately feel the difference. So being the adventurous individual that I am I advanced to a more aggressive map. The maximum stock advance is around 32 deg the 350Z stock advance is around 37 deg. I used the 37 for a max but had it reduce to 0 at 600 at a slower rate.

I used the Emanage software to measure the time from 3000 rpm in 2nd gear to 5800 rpm. I made one pass for each setting a couple of minutes apart and did the stock setting run first. Time for stock setting was 5.92 sec and 5.46 for the modified V-Manage.

How will it affect a 1/4 mile run? I will find out on sunday which is my next race. I do know that I can feel and hear the difference between the settings.

Remember this is just the initial test. Time from software install and setup to testing was about 30 mins so very basic quick setup.

Here are the Emanage log pics so you can see the difference in the cam advance.

PS Just in case anyone thinks the dip on the stock map is from the Maxima's variable intake I can assure you it isn't. The intake used for the logs is a 350Z manifold with a Motordyne 5/16"s spacer and MREV2 lower plenum.

Also I'm not sure if this setup is any superior to Eng92's, I will be interested in hearing his comments.

Was waiting for someone in here to get one of these, glad it's you.

Is there a way to display the degrees on the graph? I only see rpm vs time.

I don't think it's FROM that, but I can't help but mention that I beleive it's there on the stock map for that reason. I take back what I said, wait no, better yet, why can't you have an '02vi on your car!

Yes, when he took a screenshot he had selected RPM (the graph changes based on what you select on the top right) so at 4000~ RPM his timing was at 37.1 Degrees

Here is a pic with the degrees on it.

Ya I think it probably is there for that reason, but what I was trying to get across was that it wasn't the cause of it.

Gosh I have three 02 VI's in the garage but don't think any of them will ever find their way back on my engine.

im really glad to see that someone has finally done the v-manage. cam timing is definitely a beneficial element to the tuning process. obviously it wont really help for the high rpm situation, but with the lower RPM's there is a lot of ground to be made up. a noticeable difference in the midrange can come from the cam timing. after i had my cam timing fixed (TS ECU with TS's z33 cvtc curve) i gained ~20wtq from something like 3000 to i think 5500, you can see it on my dyno in the dyno section, there is just a huge difference before and after.

Nice work Jime, really glad to see that this worked for you and you are once again pioneering in the maxima world. cant wait to see what it nets you at the strip

Glad to see it works w/out setting off a limp mode. Thanks for sharing.

Great work Jim.

I am glad to see you got it to work and that the ecu is still in its "happy place".

I think you are on the right track with your initial tuning.
You no longer have a variable intake so I would expect the optimal curve to be of the general shape that you have.

If there is any dyno time in your future, you could try a run at maximum advance and then another cutting it back five degrees or so. If there are gains in that last five degrees, then a set of these might be of benefit.

http://z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?model...ine&prodid=922

However they are quite an investment for someone with a G35 in their not to distant future. Also, they may require more aggressive cams to be of any benefit.

The ramp down point and slope is something else you really need a dyno to optimize.

I have been waiting patiently for Greddy to release the Z33 plug and play unit so I can install one without having to cut any wires. Lately I have become quite critical as to how my wiring looks.

Judging by the lack of internet presence, it almost looks like this product was a bit of a flop for them. Poor sales always always makes for slow or non-existent product development.

Cool, seems to work (unless you get any cam control codes popping up in the next little while). Looking forward to see what it does for your track times.

So I have a noob question:
it says it is a stand alone but runs from the ECU, so can this be ran as a standalone using a standalone fuel management system or is it really a piggyback system?

The VManage operates in stand alone fashion in that it controls valve timing directly it is not piggyback.

Maybe in the fall. Right now my hands are full racing all the time and I am gone so much I don't want to go an extra day just for T&T. I also have it set up now for 12.5 and 12.9 by switching shift maps on the Suprastick and my M&H's bit the dust so I am using up my M/T 24.5's which slow me down by about .3. So until I wear out those slicks I won't be breaking any records. It does seem to run 12.5's fairly easy though on the 24.5's and still shifting around 6500 so I have another 500 to go to hit my redline, so it should be able to better my old PB no problem.

I am also another 100 lbs or so heavier with my 1000 amp battery, stock rear wheels, all seats in etc, last race they weighed me in at 2750.

When fall hits I will try and see what it will do and maybe even run a 100-150 shot to fill a void in my life.

My winnings so far are $1525 and I think I may start up a racing business to reduce my income tax. (Jime Racing Inc)

My trophy shelf is filling up rapidly this year, 3 wins, 3 seconds, 1 3rd so far and they still owe me a second place trophy. Ya my wife makes me put them in the garage.

My Son also saw the error to his ways and finally bought a Nissan.

I wouldn't say the Porsche was an error in my way, it served it purpose as a recovery tool from my motorcycle accident . I have to say I do like the Z a lot better however. The VQ is pure magic.

Sorry no more hi-jacking the thread. The OP might get mad at me.

The EU and V-manage do completely different things. Their capabilities don't overlap. This device is strictly for logging and modifying the intake cam timing. You want an a/f and timing-type tuning device, use the EU/UTEC.

/confusion

gotcha, to my noobness i thought the V-manage had the same features as an EU but the intake and cam timing was extra
