It fits. I took my spare gear set to a local transmission shop (friends of mine) and had the 'overnight parts from Japan' test fitted.

I am now anxious to install this stuff as soon as I can find a new work space.

Using the stock 5th gen tire diameter and A34 F/D the engine will be turning at 2318 RPM @ 80 MPH. 2028 RPM @ 70.

I wonder if the reduction of engine speed will be negated by the fact that the engine is making slightly less torque down there combined with greater torque division, necessitating a wider throttle angle. I sure hope not.

I have that calc'ed to be about 65mph at 2000rpm.

I have this elaborate excel spread sheet which I calibrated based on my dynojet runs.

I am still trying to decide which final drive to use. And If I use the 4.133 I really need a taller 5th gear to go with it.

Sup man. Ok what you are doing has been done by one person on a Tiburon.
I have been looking into it alot. You see my Final gear which sucks ***. I was going to use the Final Drive from a 2003 6speed Maxima. It has a Final drive of 3.8 That would make all my gears taller for my Supercharge Setup.
From what i have found out. If getting the ring wheel in pinion is the easy for for the Tiburons. I also have to get a machine shop to do a build up on the gear. I need 6mm more to make it work. I have my motor pulled right now since i am build a racing block. I am going set aside the Tranny so i can do this mod. Also if you dont know, or already have you are able to throw in the Lsd aswell. Even for me it should fit right in. Your pics will help me out alot thanks. I was going to do the with gear aswell for the gas gear like you are. from what i see i can go about 80mph and be around 2300 to 2500 rpms. when the change is made. Right now 80 mph puts me around 3500.I was able to get the parts here in town. the gears are cheap the ring and pinion is like 150.00 which is not bad at all. again thanks for posting this !!!

If you're referring to Oztib, the guy in Austrailia, I was supplying him parts to test that project. I sold him a 0.630 sixth gear and the 3.812 final drive to test.

As for this .054 gear, to my knowledge it has never been used in any production vehicle. Also as far as I know, no one else has found, ordered and installed this gear. I posted about it on your forum specifically for guys like you and Oztib who need taller running gears. And if you need more pictures I have plenty more from various projects over the years.
I don't know what kinds of deals you guys get through Hyundai, but we can get fairly good deals from certain Nissan parts departments. And IIRC, the HLSD unit new from Nissan was about $500.

Thats cool you were the guy who help oztib He got it to work and he sold it to a guy in Flordia, he is running the car with it installed now. let me go and find the part numbers i have... thanks man

Sorry, I don't know anything about these calculations but why would you need a taller 5th gear?

Out of curiousity how much did you pay for these parts?

I don't like to quote prices for other people, but I will say that I was pleasantly suprized by the cost. And I just stated where to order them from, right before you guys asked.

I will quote prices to those that ask me to do the ordering and the installation.

Just be prepared for a very long wait because there is only one pair of these gears in this country, the ones I have. Hopefully it won't take four months when you guys order them.

I need some help from one of you Canadians.

There is a 0.733 5th gear in the 2005-2006 Xtrail MFA60 and I need that part number. My copy of FAST is US only and doesn't list the T30 chassis (even though they were made in Smyrna TN).

I was just wondering why the need for the 5th gear. What would be the downfall to using the orginal 5th 0.809 and then the .54 6th gear with a 3.8120 FD?

Thanks.

There will be a big over shift between the 0.809 and the 0.540 which will cause you to use 5th gear more so than before. The 0.772 or the more ideal 0.733 will smooth the transition.

My 5th gear is pretty much useless with the 4.133 axle ratio. I skip it most of the time.

With the 3.812 the 0.809 is about where it needs to be, however the over shift to the 0.540 will be greater.

My Japanese FAST doesn't have it, they list a trans for the T30 that looks just like a 6-speed, but with no 6th gear stuff! I have a European FAST disc that I think has it, but it has conviniently disappeared! I'll clean house & let you know.

That is the 0.772 gear, not the 0.733. So the hunt is still on.

Ok folks it's done.

I put up a few new pictures and a couple of videos.
http://www.vq35de.com/Images/MFA60/SET/

I would not recommend that you guys use this gear on your 3.812 unless you have plenty of extra LOW end torque. This thing is taller than I expected it to be. And it does need a taller 5th gear to complement it.

Yesterday I drove 204 miles and topped off the tank with 7.0 gallons of fuel. The pump stopped at 6.5 but I squeezed in the other 1/2 gallon to try to equal the amount I started with.

That comes out to be 29.14 MPG which still may be inconclusive but non-the-less it's a definite improvement. This car has NEVER gotten me 29mpg on any type of driving whatsoever until now. My trip computer claims my average speed was 72-73mph but I know it reads 1-2mph little low. Most of my driving was between 75-80 and I made it a point to never let the traffic entice me to go over 90.

When I go home today I might try to drive a little slower just so I can see that magical 30mpg mark.

So what are your actaul RPM's @ 60mph and 80mph?

Are you still planning on using a different 5th Gear?

AS is with this 6th gear is it practical for everyday driving? How is the switch from 5th to 6th?

What do you hope to accomplish with the taller 5th gear?

Will this then raise top speed?

Thanks.

Great Work.

60mph is about 1750rpm
80mph is about 2400rpm thereabouts

I don't plan on doing a taller 5th gear anytime soon.

Watch the videos, there is a big difference between 5th and 6th.

The taller 5th would be to narrow the gap and then raise my top speed (not that I need it). The 4.133 final drive makes 5th too short.

Is anyone else interested in doing this? I got 1 order for these, the guys at Motorsports are doing a JDM order on Friday, and it would be a great time to order up! The offical price of the moment is $127.34 for the set. E-mail, PM, or call me @ 888-254-6060.

Thanks for posting the numbers, now it seems that with the 3.8120 FD that the numbers @ 80mph seem to be similar 2500 or so.

Do you think that it would be worth swapping over to this gear or just using the 3.8120 FD?

Also could you explain what you are reffering to when you say "over shift"?

Have you happen to locate the correct 5th Gear Part number? I am really thinking of using this gear if it does offer suffcient gains (Gas Mileage)

And do you happen to know what the numbers at 60mph and 80mph would likely be if using the 3.8120 FD?

THANKS!

Here is the spreadsheet I made.

It's calibrated with my 245/45-17 tires using the tach readings on my WBO2 controller and GPS for speed.

The thing is, it seems that SR20 has the best of both worlds. Shorter gearing on the lower gears (for obvious reasons) and around the same gearing for 6th (actually it seems to be a bit longer even) for gas mileage.

No, it wasn't to you. It was a general statement.

You quoted him after the spreadsheet had been posted. Odds are, that spreadsheet answered his question.

Same trans as the 2.0 Diesel P12 Primera, which is the same as the MFA60.

Nice. A 0.723 and a 0.596

Now we just need part numbers. This list is getting crazy.

I'm sorry to bump such an old thread, but this seemed like the appropriate thread to ask this question. I came over from Mazda6club to try and learn something about our shared transmission.

What are the case differences between the 5 and 6 speed MFA60 transmissions?
Could a 5 speed clutch cover be used with a 6 speed case?
If not, what are the issues preventing it?

I appreciate any input.
