Trying to determine what is causing clearance issues with coil pack mounts.

5th gen LIM ... on my 98 it didn't clear coil #'s 3 and 5. It hit the bosses as well as the coil pack itself slightly.

Kevlo was speculating it was the Mitsu/Hanshin coil difference... he may be on to something I'm not sure... since the bosses are hitting the valve covers have to be different too.

There doesn't seem to be any real height difference with the LIM's... unless perhaps the angle on the UIM mating surface is slightly different but roughly the same height through the centerline. I don't remember really noticing anything like that but then again I just took a couple quick measurements, didn't really study them carefully.

I used the 4th gen LIM and had to grind the #3 and #5 coil mounting bosses on my 95.

I'm curious about this too...If those who vote could also post what they voted and the year of their car as DandyMax did I would appreciate it.

I only used the DEK upper IM, everything else is from the DE and I had to grind down the mounts.

What kind of wheel do you use with the dremel. Would one of those stone grinding drums do the trick?

Grinding stones can get clogged with aluminum. I would use the coarse-medium grit sanding drums. Actually the cut-off wheels would do a good job, too, and probably a lot faster.

Or a good die-grinder bit works quickly, especially with air tools.

So am I the only one with a 5th gen LIM who's had clearance problems?

We already have a dremel though, so I'll just stick with that.

I believe maxS also had problems and he also has a '98.

I used the 5th gen LIM and had clearance issues. Used a hand held grinder took about two seconds do grind down the coil pack mounting bosses.

At homedepot they sell little Dremel Kits, they have General Purpose, Cutting Kit, and Polishing...

They go for about $12/ea...

The general purpose should serve you well, it brings one big cutting wheel, and 36 regular sized cut-off wheels.

Well there goes the theory of 97 and earlier being fine.

Do the coilpacks have enough support when there's only one place to attach them?

Yes, there's not really any load on them.

I used the 5th gen lower IM but I used the 5th gen rear valve cover /5th gen rear coil packs as well so I had no clearance issues.

I still don't understand why some of us have issues. I am using the 4th gen vavle cover, but am about to switch to the 5th gen one since i have to replace the vavle cover gaskets. They are leaking,

I have a 98 and had clearance issues w/ the 3 & 5 mounts and packs themselves using the 5th gen lower. They are the Hanshin coils.

I was just gonna pipe in with that, i've read a lot of posts about grinding the bosses down, why not just swap over the 5th gen valve covers too? is there any difference other than the lack of clearence in the rear?

You could do that too, would make the swap MUCH easier, plus you wont have to figure out the PCV valve since it sticks out of the side, I might try to get a 5th gen VC one day, but there not that easy to get ahold of, thats why people use the A32 VC...

EDIT to my original post:

For the A33 VC you need the 5th gen rear Coil Packs .

I see some people like to vote in 2-year-old polls.

The LIM you use won't matter. It's which VC you use.
