Looking at buying a 2017 Platinum (CVT questions)
Hello everyone! I’m really loving what I’m seeing on the 2017 Maxima Platinum and the ones in my price range all have between 70-100k on the odometer. I know there’s been a lot of controversy over CVTs with Nissan, so this is really the only thing giving me any hesitation with getting one. I’ve never owned a Nissan or a vehicle with a CVT for that matter. I’ve mostly only ever driven manual transmission vehicles. I’m getting older now, so I’d like to get something that’s easier on my bones. 😁 Is there anything I should be worried about? Thanks!

I am on my 6th Nissan with a CVT. I have put over 100k miles on each one without any issues. I usually drain and fill the fluid around 70k miles as a precaution, and it is not that hard to do. Easier on the earlier editions, but still not bad. CVT's have a bad rep, but I have never seen a post about a failed transmission where the owner said it was their own fault, it's always a bad transmission.

Generally speaking the CVT on Maximas have been reliable. I’ve read that they engineer them to be a little tougher when paired with a high horsepower engine. Most of the CVT horror stories have been with their cheaper cars, guess you get what you pay for.
That said , it probably not as tolerant of abuse as a old fashioned regular transmission.you definitely will need to do the recommended maintenance, and you should not beat on it. It’s pretty quick, but definitely no sports car
Lastly, it’s no toyota/Lexus... I’d probably try to start at 50k instead of 75-100. I’ve heard of a few Maxima’s getting 200+k, but it doesn’t quite have that reputation. It’s good value for the money though if you can find one at a reasonable price right now

Below is a link to a high mileage thread in the 7th generation Maxima forum. I had a 2009 SV before I got the '17 Platinum and put over 100k miles on it before trading. Just interesting reading about what you could expect if you treat it gently.

I have a 2017 Platinum with 92k miles. I haven't had any issues at all with the CVT, or anything else for that matter. Hmm I guess the exception is a rattle sound that comes from under the back "dashboard", or whatever that area is called between the back row headrests and the windshield. I have to figure out what it is, it's driving me nuts. Other than that I have loved the car, the interior is so nice and comfortable.

My 17 Platinum is 2 months new with 51k miles.
First thing I did, changed the oil and Tran fluids
my Nissan mechanic says to change the Tran every 30K miles, engine every 4k, and you will get years of miles (don’t go hotrod the lights, etc)
Still have the ‘11, now at 312k miles (Tran replaced at 250k milesw a 80k donor), the fluid same as I described above.
