Are transmission problems common on the 8th Generation Maxima?

Sorry guys, tried looking it up on the site but couldn't find the thread of the problem. Driving a 2006 Infiniti G35 and have had minimal problems with the car, Bought it new and other than maintenance it's been hassle free it you ask me. My prior car was a 2000 Maxima and although it had it's share of defects, I absolutely loved the car. I've looked at my options and a 2018 Maxima is pretty much what fits my needs best. I've also priced the 2017 Infiniti Q60s and am considering it. How common is the transmission problem and has the dealership solved it to your satisfaction and in a timely manner? Thank you so much for all of those that can chip in!

As with all manufacturers, a few owners have had problems. But most of us have had great experiences.

The latest CVT's are well sorted and a mature platform. Best to drive one for a day or two. Even rental would be a good way to live with one. I love the low to mid 30's 33+ MPG. Turbine smooth IMHO

I haven't had any issues yet. My only complaint is there is a somewhat hard "downshift" at low speeds

No problems in 32000 miles now.

Up to 25000 miles, no problems yet. The CVT is one of the better features of this car imho. Very responsive and smooth.

There's the mysterious low RPM rattle mentioned in several threads here. It may or may not be the transmission as it doesn't seem to have been resolved. Mine is very faint, it started at 20,000 or a little before.

Then, there's the fact that every dealership I've gone to for any reason in the past few months has pushed the very expensive transmission fluid change, despite the fact that I was foolish enough to have mine done recently, at 30,000! Service is absolutely horrible, they just look for ways to rip you off while not giving the car what it actually needs.

From what I've read and been told, the Maxima's have a stronger CVT for the higher torque output than the CVTs used in the earlier Altimas and Rogues that were imploding. My dealership contact hasn't seen any Maximas come in with CVT issues and it seems the Maximas haven't been having any more problems than any other car is expected to have.

That being said, the CVT in the 8th gen is tuned well and really responsive compared to some of the other cars in Nissan's lineup. Give it a shot. They really are great cars!

You think maybe the reason you couldn't find the thread of the problem is that there is no problem.

I believe the vast majority of Maxima owners have no problems unless they abuse their CVT's. On this site, I believe you will find that most of us just love our Maximas with cvt's. I've owned cvt's now for over 200,000 miles and I have never experienced a problem. My 2017 SL now has 34,000 miles with no problems. If I ever get tired of this 2017 after about 10 years I will most likely traded in on another Maxima CVT, however I doubt by that time they will exist as it seems more and more are going to trucks and SUVs.

2016 SV about 55k miles here. No major issues. Had a slight shudder when the torque converter kicks in during stop and go driving. Changed the transmission fluid 10k miles ago and it is less noticeable now. I bought a Nissan SecurityPlus Gold warranty until 120k miles. I will probably keep it since by that time the resale value will have plummeted so much lower than what I paid new.

That happened as soon as it was Titled to you. You have already lost the biggest portion

You're not wrong. It has already dropped so much. Might as well drive the wheels off it. I financed $31k in March 2016 for it, owe about $5,900 right now. KBB value ranges between $13,134 and $14,795. The issues Nissan corporate is having with other Jatco transmissions really isn't helping. My next car might be a used Acura, Lexus or Honda. I've owned Nissans since 2005 and my mom had an '87 Stanza GXE from 87-97.
