HI everyone,
My 1996 Maxima with about 150,000 miles on it has been having some random rough starts. The car is tuned well, so the problem seemed odd.......So I read about the ign switch issues. Since a new ignition switch is so cheap, I went to the dealer and got a new switch. I put in it in today rather quickly. But now that I have the old switch on the bench, is there a way to know if the part is truly bad? HOw would I test the old part?

question is, did that fix the problem??? is it starting better?? if so, i think your fixed the issue with starting. if still starting rough, than scan for codes,maybe clean the maf and uim.

Well at this point I don't know if it actually fixed the problem, since the "rough starts" were random. I know that I don't have any codes, so I will wait and see.
I was just wondering if I could tell by looking at the old part, if in fact it was bad.

i would have add a ground wire to the tranny before replacing ignition switch,

"Rough" starts aren't caused by ignition switch problems. When the buttons on the switch wear out, what happens is that you turn the switch and nothing happens. And then you wiggle the key and it starts. It is possible to take the switch apart and replace the buttons if you know what you're doing, but it's not for the faint hearted!

im going to say my ignition is pretty worn...i can start my car, starts hartd almost as if the starter is going to die eventually but once its started i can remove my key with the car running....hows that for a bad ignition lol

What does that do? Can you elaborate?

he means add a ground wire to the tranny from, somewhere on the ignition.. lol

On my old GSR, it would start up fine, then just cut off almost like a main relay in a Honda, but then sometimes I could barely hold the key forward after it was running and wouldnt have a problem. Atleast, thats how I had to limp it home when I realized I needed a switch, haha.
