Car started running funny on the way home from work tonight. Check Engine Light came on so I went by Autozone to get a reading of the code. It came back that the Camshaft Position Sensor was bad. The guy checking it mentioned that it was the front one. He advised that it was easy to replace and showed me a picture of the sensor. Can anyone tell me exactly where I will find this? If you have a picture that will work as well. I have a 2002. I just want to make sure it is something that I can get to easily before I buy the part and attempt to replace it.

You need find out if it was bank 1 or bank 2 not front or rear! The reason I say this is because bank 1 is the rear bank(firewall side) containing cylinders 1,3,5 while bank 2 is the forward bank(radiator side) containing cylinders 2,4,6! Now if you open you hood and go to the driver side of the engine! Look at your cylinder heads you'll see on the upper corners one green connector on each head. Bank 1's sensor connector is parallel with the floor, while Bank 2's sensor connector is pointed upward! Be sure to find out if the code is stating bank 1 or bank 2! If you've got the cash just order all the following sensors crank, bank 1 cam and bank 2 cam and be sure to check whether you're covered under the recall pertaining to those sensors as well!

Thanks. I will check the recall on those first. I will go get another reading to find out which bank is bad. You mentioned some other parts. Are those neccesary when replacing or just suggestions?

Ok,
I just got back from Autozone and discovered that it was bank 1. I am a little confused now as they advised again that it was the Camshaft Position Sensor and they gave me a code of P0011. When I checked the site for this code it read "P0011 - IVT Control (Bank 1)" Are these the same or related?

For those who have changed the Cam Position Senson themselves, are there any tricks to removing it from the wire connector? I am referring to the one in the rear (firewall side). I have been wrestling with it for over 15 minutes and it will not budge. Should I be able to just pull it from the connector?

No, you must use your thumd to push in the trigger lock in order to release it! It is a high pressure trigger, you'll heard it or feel it click once it unlocks! Then slide the connect off the sensor! Do you have office hands or mechanic hands? This is the confirmation test! Good luck dude.....

Yes, the rear cylinder closest to the firewall cylinders 1,3,5!

I thought I had mechanics hands but this is about to make me think I have Office hands. To add injury to insult, the SES light went off today. I may try it again in the morning.

Just push the green trigger in, if your thumbs aren't strong enough use something blunt such as a socket or small piece of wood...

Sometimes those connectors get "caught". I don't care if you have the hands of Zeus. They take more finesse than brute strength. A trick I've learned which helps with some of the stubborn connectors is to push the release tab, push the connector against the other connector(as though you're installing it), and then pull it off. This will help it get passed the hump. Good luck.

Hey All,

I'm trying to change out the cam position sensors on my 2003 Maxima and can't get the plugs off. I can press the green tab all the way in just fine, but it won't let go. Is it just that the car is 9 years old and they're rotted on there good? Would WD-40 help release them? At this point I'm wondering if the sensors are even bad and it's not the pins being too corroded to let a signal through?

Well, if the engines are the same and bank 1 on his is the firewall that would make your bank 2 the one closer to the radiator

Try grabbing it with a pair of bent needle nose and wiggling it a little, mine was pretty stuck on there.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I keep trying, but nothing moves, not even a wiggle. I'm wondering if there isn't a wad a sand and grit in there cementing it shut?

Sometimes pushing the connector on tighter while you push the tab helps. And then keep holding the tab down while you pull/wiggle the connector off.

Yes, both tabs go all the way to the bottom with no problem. But the suckers are on there, nothing moves.

I'll give this a try and see if it works?

I just replaced mine as a complete novice, so it's not very hard, but a couple tips for the beginners out there. The Bank 2 sensor is simple to access and not difficult at all. The Bank 1 sensor is behind a mess of hoses and wires and is difficult to get to (at least in my '04 Maxima), and I don't have a whole bunch of tools. I found that taking out the sensor before disconnecting it from the wiring harness was easier as it gave me more room to play with and some open space to access the infamous green button. Also, once I got the sensor unscrewed I could not get the connector off with my bare hands for 20 minutes, but I took a pair of needle nosed and depressed the button and it popped off immediately. I know someone has already mentioned it but the bank 1 (rear) sensor is the flat one, and the bank 2 (forward) sensor is the angled one. Neither I nor the autozone employee knew which was which, so I bought both and ended up doing both to be safe. It seems like the bank 2 one is the problematic one though, and sure enough mine was covered in oil.

Thank God I found this forum. I was about to get a timing chain replaced, but it sounds like it may be a Camshaft Position Senor Bank 1. I took it to Autozone and it had a P0340 Code. Im changing out the Cam Sensor and will keep you posted.

UPDATE: I changed out the CPS Bank 1 by taking off the entire housing unit. Got the part for $60 total and took about 20 mins. I haven't reset the codes yet, but I'm still dealing with a P0328 and P0340 codes, Knock Sensor and NATS Failure.

I posted in another thread already, but my car has never dies or locked up. The security light blinks when I start it. It just wouldn't turn over a few times. I guess Im lucky because it starts after 1-2 tries when it happens.


FYI: Advance Auto has 15% if you buy online and pick up in store.
