no CEL's.

i was going to change oil to either Castrol Syntec (cause a G35 with a knocking sound fixed his with Castrol) or maybe Royal Purple which I've heard good things about.

Would you guys stick with 5W 30 or maybe try a thicker oil like 10w 30?

LOL...I've not found anything easy to fix on my 09..just changing the plugs took about 3 or 4 hours. I only mentioned the pump as it may have run a bit dry during the leak phase or the impact may have done more damage than thought (ergo the lame pulley theory) e. The easiest and least expensive is the oil change others have been talking about...never been a fan of oil additives but it most likely won't hurt anything. The "easy" fix of the oil change doesn't help, I might start looking there.

My Max is from the video you linked to. A couple of things to note. My car has sounded like this since the first 1000 miles (perhaps earlier). Oil brand, type has no effect. I've used Nissan's ester, Mobile dino, and Castrol GTX 5w-30 dino. It is not related to gas, as I've had nothing but 91+ in the car over the last year and a half.

I seriously doubt its timing chain related. I know what chain slap sounds like and this isn't it. Also, its my experince chain noise tends to go away after the vehicle has warmed. This noise starts when vehicle has warmed.

I've had it looked at recently @ my dealership by a tech who really tried to isolate the noise with a mechanics stethoscope, but couldn't isolate where it was coming from. He basically was of the opinion that it was innocuous, as was every other tech they brought in to check, but I'm not so sure. I'm going to continue to look for an answer.

One thing I'm going to suggest next time is to try and diagnose it OUT of the service area. Its just way too noisy. In the service bay, the noise is less audible. In my driveways its MUCH more apparent.

i hear a strange slushing sound (like liquid?) when im accelerating slowly and its subtle and goes away at higher rpms. a friend said it could be related to the coolant system.

can you even test a water pump for damage? or do you simply replace it and see if the new one performs better?

Sounds like a sticky lifter. Take the valve cover off, hopefully it isn't in the rear bank, and look for sludge or a plugged lubrication hole. There might not be much, but it doesn't take much to make the problem. If you do find crap, DO NOT do a reverse pressure flow of the oil system. It will fix the problem for a little while, then your motor will literally blow itself apart. Have the cylinder head broken down and thoroughly cleaned, you might be able to demand a new cylinder head since the lifter could be permanently damaged and who knows what else, bent valve or no longer being able to seat properly.

Whatever you do don't go near engine restore (the one in the silver can) omg I put that into my engine bc the Nissan tech said I have a slight knocking sound when reving softly and he told me use gas treatment and I saw engine restore so I bought it and totally screwed up my day. The car ran nice with it for 5 min then it seized up and couldn't start.. Long story short I looked at other ppls post on m35 forums and f150 and it thickens your oil with iron inside the formula to help compression or some bs. Needed to flush the oil twice to get it back to normal but it did what it was meant to do thicken the oil so much the engine can't breathe and clean it (oil was black)

A lot of us old guys used a stick held against the part we were testing against our ear to listen for "abnormal sounds." Fortunately we finally replaced that with a stethoscope. You can use a mechanics stethoscope to listen around the water pump and help pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Other than that it is R&R. But hopefully, your won't have to get that far.

Did you get your oil changed yet?

Oil is being changed today. A friend listened to the water swooshing sound and said it sounds like an air bubble in my coolant line. He gave me instructions from the 6thgen forums to "burp" the air out of my coolant line so I'll give that a shot.

Just had the oil changed to Castrol Syntec 5w 30. No real change in noise yet.

Just had my oil change at Nissan and they messed my car up with their crappy oil
Now the car is vibrating violently lmao I should have done my own oil change last time I let Nissan touch my car

Okay burping the coolant system got rid of the weird water gushing sound when accelerating. Gonna drive on this for a while and see how the motor sounds after a few long drives. I can't tell if I'm imagining that it's a little quieter or if it really is, I'll take another video soon.

Sorry to hear you’re going through this--terribly worrisome. I hope it resolves soon.

I'm concerned about how hot things got. Do you think the system had completely steamed off? I think you do have a case on the body shop. It sounds like they didn't replenish the cooling system properly. It makes me wonder if the block was dry and they just filled the radiator. If in fact that's what they did I'm concerned about warping. Once things got hot enough for the thermostat to open, cold coolant flushed through a hot engine. The thing that thwarts this theory is why didn't the steam-off happen sooner than the trip south. Since you know some skilled people I’d try to get some answers on what could go wrong from the overheat: warped heads, warping in the value train, stress cracking in the block, faulty oil flow due to burning or clotting. I’m reaching, but I’d find out. We know the body shop screwed up was something along the line of this theory since you subsequently found no leaks in the system.

A second possibility, touched on by a prior post, much of the noise is coming from the serpentine belt/pulley track. I have heard a serpentine belt make the engine sound like it had thrown something--loud metallic tap. I found it by using a spray bottle with water--sprayed it on the belt and the noise instantly stopped. Related, would be a bearing in the pulley track or water pump. The root cause for theory is the area got wet from the coolant spray contaminating the belt and got in bearings.

I hope you get a resolution. I’d definitely document things and get timeline, pictures, and arguments in place so that if the resolve is to wait and see, that you have something to push back hard on the body shop so they are on the hook to replace your engine.

the service guy laughed and said its a v6 buddy thats how it should be i was like whaaaaat r u crazy or something ive had this car for almost 2 years now and never i told him to be careful and to walk away before i do something to land me in jail. i will switch my oil to royal purple next week and hopefully it will restore my car to the way it was before nissans crappy reconditioned synthetic oil change.
not to mention i went also for rattle in overhead console and rear rattling and waited 2 hrs for him to say we dont have enough time to road test ..ever tho i had an appointment for it (all i asked him was to check if the rear bushings were lubricated not to road test it) butttt we can do a oil change...
Oo and they found my positive side terminal on battery corroded turning into white powder but said its not enough to change and still ok I have 24k miles what r they waiting for my warranty to run out
Good thing it's a lease cuz they can keep it like that for them..I love this car but y do the service treat u like **** first couple times the service were amazing they changed transmission with me not asking engine mount front speakers and many more even gave me a free oil change after transmission swap with full synthetic but now it's like they are fed up with me even tho Nissan pays them good every time I have a problem

Well here is where I'm at now. I think the engine may be alright now, through this process the engine has gotten an oil change, Shell V-Power ran through it, and had the coolant lines burped. Everyone who hears the engine in person who either owns a Maxima or is a mechanic (both Nissan and people I'm friends with) have said it sounds normal. It's everyone who hears the videos that say there is something wrong, so I'm seriously wondering if maybe the video introduced or magnified a sound that wasn't there? Or maybe they put regular in it, or just there was crap built up that the oil change cleaned out?

To be honest with my hood popped now I don't feel like it sounds excessively loud anymore, but can't tell if this is my mind playing tricks on me or if it really is quieter. I'll have an updated vid uploaded tomorrow. I'm really hoping it will sound better. For those who have weighed in saying it sounds damaged can you do me a small favor and take a video of your own engine with the microphone a couple inches away and see if the video picks up similar sounds maybe?

Haha, I already did that after the 370Z cruise we joined in on Saturday. I assured Ghozt that his motor vs mine sounds almost identical hood up and hood closed. I think he's finally feeling better that his motor doesn't sound like a diesel anymore

Yeah, I definitely appreciate the feedback. I probably won't relax until I hear it from several more people but definitely starting to look better than I originally thought. Back to blowing up the CVT
