How To: Navigation Bypass 2011 Nissan Maxima [Video]
This is a video tutorial specific for performing a navigation bypass on the 2011 Nissan Maxima. This technique does NOT require the purchase of any kits, just basic inexpensive items that can be found at any hardware/electronics store.
Special thanks to all the hard work done on previous models by djfrestyl, KPierson, netjack, and others at maxima.org forums which paved the way for this tutorial.
This is in 2 parts: part 1 is the meat and potatoes, and part 2 demonstrates putting everything back together and seeing the Bypass in action!
See Part 1:

Note: This video definitely could have been shorter, but I wanted to make something to give some background to the other newbies out there... so grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy...

Good question, but there are no error lights at all. I tried to emphasize grounding the brake wire from the stereo end- this prevents the brake light from contstantly lighting up, but still allows the light to turn on when the parking brake is actually on.

More important, will this bypass allow me to use the touchscreen while driving? I'm not like typing or anything but it's annoying having to pull over to scroll down past the first 4 options it shows you
btw nice video man - great work!!

@Ghozt: just retested this morning. Touchscreen is fully functional with all features.
@Compusmurf: thanks for adding to the stickie. I might get some free time this week to write something up. Will update here when I do.

Great vids
Fredmc2020, you are awesome man. That was a great vid tutorial.
You mentioned something in the video that interested me. Some with non-navs don't hook up the vss wire to a switch and thus lose some features like mileage, etc. Let say you go on a road trip and watch movies for 4 hours so that means the the vss is not active for that time. What implications does this have on the various system and readings once we turn in back on after having it off for so so long of time and miles?? Just a thought.
Also, what kind of switch did you use? In another thread it was advised to use a double throw double pole switch that was grounded. It looks like you used a different switch and it doesn't look like you grounded it and everything is fine.

Re: VSS wire: Good point with this throwing off system readings such as mpg... however I am not 100% positive on the full effect of disabling it for a long period of time (it was just something I regurgitated from another thread). I'm speculating that you can still check the remaining miles/mpg's/fuel consumption through the dash, BUT I will be going on a road trip this weekend so I will certainly test it out.
Re: The Switch: As a disclaimer, I know next to nothing about switches or expert-level electronics. However, from my understanding all that is needed is a Single-Pole, Single-Throw switch due to the fact that the VSS is a single wire that doesn't have a ground. Basically all we are doing with a SPST (Single Pole, Single Throw) is cutting the power (in this case, cutting the signal). You can check out this link for more detail on switches and their respective applications: http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/switch.htm
If you do find otherwise, be sure to post back here with the result or pm me.
Update: My road trip got cancelled, but I have been driving for the past week with the VSS disabled and it is still showing my mpg's, miles to emty, etc. both on the dash and the onscreen computer.

I finally got around to dong this today and it went very smoothly. I only had a chance to go around the block so far but one question I have is what if anything am I losing by leaving the switch off at all times? The navigation still seemed to work. Is there something I didn't notice not working while that VSS wire connection is cut?

@funnyman82: The steps should be similar for the '10. From what I have found elsewhere on the forum it is still the violet/white for VSS and red/green for parking brake. I believe the only difference would be the location of these wires; they may be part of a different socket in back of the stereo.
As for getting maps from your phone onto the screen... make sure you have composite cable hookups in your center console, I'm not sure if your package has that. If you do have composite hookups all you need after the bypass is a video out cable.

I have found that when I drive slowly or stop frequently at traffic lights the navigation is still able to keep up with my location, even with the VSS disabled. However as speed increases, the navigation becomes choppy and cannot keep up as well. What kind of driving are you doing when it seems to work fine?

I don't have an iPhone for the GPS, but I use my 80gig iPod for my video mixes.

I have a 2011 w/out nav I have it apart but it dosent have the same color wires as fredmc does I guess his nav has more hookups. I found the vio/white but here is no red and green? just two reds on the 32pin one solid the other has silver dots? tried to trace it to the parking break switch no luck any ideas? before I put it back together?

hey fredmc2020........ i know this post was awhile ago.. but i recently bought a brand new 2011 max with nav & everything.. how does your car work now after the bypass?? any known issues that were notice recently?? navigation isnt choppier?? i really want to do this

@Mikky: everything still works flawlessly. No errors and no warning lights at all. You definitely need the on/off switch to allow the nav to function when you want it. I say go for it you wont regret it
@moneyUWM: maps from my old iphone did work through the rca hookups. should be the same method as with a tech max as long as you have rca inputs in the center console.
@wyobbagy: not sure what is up with the different hookups. The wire may be mostly green with a red stripe on it... It was pointed out on youtube that my naming of this wire was backwards. Let me know here or pm me if you dont find it.

To pull off the dash I used a couple of plastic pry tools that came with an old iphone repair kit. If you cover the screwdriver with tape it should provide enough protection.

At the time I was jailbroken and had some tvout app from cydia. I forget what it was called tho, I have android now and can just use the TvOut setting.

Am I understanding this properly? If I cut and ground the Red & Green wire (parking brake) and just cut the violet and white wire (VSS) and not add the switch, wont this make it a permanent bypass...essentially the same thing as if I added the switch and toggled it off?

yes because it would take away the VSS wire and ground the E-Brake allowing you to use it while in motion. Really only need the VSS for NAV and MPG readings.

Ohhhh, I see. So it would bypass, but then prevent me from using my Nav...now I see why the switch is necessary.

Mission acomplished 100 % Successful works Great I also added a switch like you did (I bought a $1.50 12V Push Pull switch from Harbor freight and drilled a hole in the center of the Swtich Blank next to were the key can be inserted) you need to do this if you plan to use the AUX for your Ipod or Aftermarket GPS like I bought and have comming. My plan is to mount the GPS reciever into the Glove box and tap into the RCA conecters in the consle...Thanks for the guidance it was helpful. PS there are really good photos on wikihow as well if anyone wants to confirm the process the only difference is the wires are Lt Blue and Grey on a G35 Infinity but on the same harness in the exact same location. thats what gave the the guts to cut the green with the red stripe they are on the same 32pin plug 106 and 107.
Will be interesting to see how the aftermarket GPS works? Anyone know of any install tips?

Aftermarket GPS
I just added the Pyle PLNVB 29 Gps to my Maxima. Connected through the RCA jacks. Quite the job to get the Glove box and Shifter Console out. I got it on ebay for less than $100. Works good the quality of the factory screen is less than perfect but is still worth having. I did notice the incabin filter is no longer behind the Glove box like in the older Models anyone know were it is on the 2011?

This is why I love this forum. Read all the comments n etc. but a few questions.
2012 S(no Nav/Tech pack)
Pretty much the basis model
Yes or No?
If yes, do I have to run RCA cables or inputs to my center console?
Sorry for all the newbie question, but just making sure lol

Hi,
Great job.
I have a 2010 maxima ti350 and did mostly as per the videos except for the switch and grounding the parking break wire by sticking it to the back of the CD player with a tape.
I now see an engine light that stays on when the car is running. Is grounding the parking break wire to the back of the CD player a bad idea?
Any suggestions is appreciated

It might be possible, through some type of app or connection cable. Theres a few threads on here where some have replaced the screen with a nexus or other tablet. I have mine bypassed and love it. Have had zero issues.

I've had my Maxima now for 3 yrs and I've only used the DVD player 2x. Fed up I went to 4 stereo shops hoping to buy a bypass kit, no such kit exists for the 2010 Maxima I was told.
I did a search here thinking that someone would have come up with something and sure enough you guys did.
I was prepared to spend $200+ dollars for a bypass kit but thanks to the guys here I only spent $13 dollars and have the satisfaction of doing it myself.
Thanks for the video it made it simple and quick.
