Didn't holding the brake pedal down and pushing the tranny shift handle all the way to the front (nearest position to the the dashboard) work?
EDIT - It may also be that the ignition may have to be on. I always put my car in park before turning off the motor, and simply follow this routine:
Hold down the brake pedal as I move the shift lever to the frontmost position (park), then press the START/OFF button to stop the engine.

Put together a pick-a-nick basket, drive out to Yellowstone, and tell the friendly ranger that you are there to see Yogi.

Nah. Yogi can't help because he's seen this problem all too often. He will say that its deja vu all over again.

I have put mine in park several times. Ouachita Park, Mount Magazine Park, Petit Jean Park and Devil's Den Park to name a few.
