Stuck tilt wheel...

Well, my telescopic-tilt steering wheel was stuck in the lowest position, so I carried it to the dealer for repair this week and all I can say is - I can not wait until it happens again after my vehicle warranty runs out. It was a $1400 repair, they ended up having to replace the entire steering column.

I hear you. But the telescopic steering wheel is a very nice feature.

I betcha fixing the double moon roof will put a dent in one's wallet.

Is this the third or fourth poster to have this problem this summer? Most of the problems we see here are only reported by one poster. A few have been reported by two. But when we see three or four posters with the same problem, that is bad news.

I am now concerned this may be a problem many '09s will have. If this happens with my Maxima soon after I reach 36K miles, I am going to be very unhappy, because I will know it is a Nissan design problem, and it is going to cost me a bundle. Not good.

Speaking of that dual panel roof. When you go over an un even surface, does it sound like your roof is cracking? Not the glass it self, just like the frame.

That sucks. Makes me glad that I have the manually operated tilt/telescope feature. If that breaks it should be much simpler to fix. I don't use it anyway, so if it sticks I don't care. Adjusted it when I first got it, and will probably never touch it again.

In a word, no. I would have noticed.

Many other premium SV's on this Board. They should weigh in.

What's nice about the power tilt/telescope feature is that it's so easy to tweak while you're driving - something you never think of with the manually operated columns. I find myself using both the tilt and the telescope features (along with the power seat and auto/manual transmission settings) to alter my driving position depending on whether I'm in town, on the highway, or just in a different mood.

Now if it just keeps working...

My steering wheel hasn't stuck yet, but whenever I get out of the car, it squeaks as it raises up. Anyone have this problem too? It looks like a minor PITA to get in there to lube it.

Yes, mine does complain a bit as well. Just not enough to take it in to the shop!

Yeah ANNINO, I believe you made a wise choice, I don't see any $1400 repairs in your future, LOL.

I also, didn't think I would use it much, if at all, but the memory settings for each driver activating with a simple touch of the key fob is a very nice feature. I guess, I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best with the new unit.

My '04 began sometimes making that squeak after four years, but my '09 has not done this yet. I do remember one or two posters here mentioning this squeak on their '09s last winter.

If you do most of the driving, then you made a very wise choice.

My wife and I alternate driving, and switch often on trips. Sometimes she wil drive us on a short trip to the Post Office/Malt Shop/etc, and I will drive us back home. By pressing just one button, the steering wheel, mirrors, seat, etc, all position themselves exactly right for whichever of us is driving. So we really need and use the memory system, which requires all components to be power-operated.

I have my fingers crossed. I may even consider an extended warranty.

Yes, mine also does this as well. Usually after it has been setting for awhile.

doubtful they had to replace the entire column. when i worked at nissan this is one of things i put in. The electrical connector that goes from the controls to the column, comes unclipped very easily.
::edit:: if those things are $1400, they trashed thousands of dollars worth of columns in one day

Dont misunderstand, the unit was being powered. It would telescope fine but would sit there whining and grinding in the lowest position. I dont know if it really required replacing the entire assembly, but thats what they did. I deal with mechanical and electronic systems by trade but I didn't tear it apart because it was under warranty, but once the warranty is gone it's game on, I'm not coughing up $1400 without a look-see.

oh, i thought you said it would telescope, but it wouldnt do anything when you tried to tilt. if you tear apart the column surround, you will notice that a lot of the mechanics of the column are in eye view. take a look at it, you will find something from the "green lantern" down there. if you look down there, you should see it. it looks like the green lantern symbol. kinda funny

My car sounds like its like twisting the frame when the car is on eaven like when making a slow right hand turn into my driveway that has a steep up from a flat surface and I hear like creaking almost.

I never paid attention to when it was going up but sometimes when it goes down it almost has a squeak to it.. I though it was a messed up beeping thing from when I started car but it could be another thing who knows.

Is it even to the glass cuz i have a gap on the passenger side on the roof where the sunroof closes opposite of the glass that doesnt completely even out but there r no leaks. Ill take a pic when i get a chance

Can anyone make a video of this to maybe get the sound it makes or the actions that it does?

Yeah that would be nice to see. I noticed my wheel when it moves up, has gotten quieter in the last month or so.

I have the same issue. I cant tell if its from the rear of the car or the sunroof. Sounds like a creaking sound. Took it to dealer for service yesterday, they claimed they heard nothing, yet i heard it leaving the dealership. Seems to be uneven surfaces like KillaKam indicated. Its the only issue that bugs me with this car.

I didn't know this was an issue with this car. I really hope this isn't a problem.
