I am dropping off my car in the morning to have the recall done on the front suspension, same issues as some of the others on here... popping noises over speed bumps, etc etc. They claim it'll take 3-4 hours and they are getting me a rental... so we'll see. I never got a recall letter, I just asked the service mgr. about it again on Monday when I brought it in for an oil change. I'll try and check this message board in the morning before I take it in, so if you guys have any questions you want me to ask just lemme know.
I've been having a problem with my 09 -- I'm not sure if it's related but it only happens when I'm making fairly sharp left turns. I'm hearing a lot of noise from the front right wheel as well.
During sharp left turns the steering will pull the the right. This doesn't happen every time but often enough. The amount of pull varies from a slight resistance up to the wheel almost jerking in my hand until I straighten the car out. There is often a noise (hard to describe from memory but sounds like a slipping noise) from the front right when it happens.
I took the car in months ago about this but the techs couldn't reproduce it. It kept happening, however, and the frequency and severity has been increasing.
I finally took the car in again (oil change/front passenger seat fix) and mentioned the problem. They looked at it and again couldn't reproduce it. However, they stated they had a new steering rack on order.
What is curious is the fact that the car was perfect on the way back from the dealership. Steering was the smoothest it's been and all wheel noise has disappeared. I wonder if they know what the problem is but won't admit it and just made some adjustments until the new steering rack comes in.
Is it normal for a dealership to order a costly part replacement like that without having a clue as to what the actual problem is? It's being covered under warranty.
VERY interesting problem, and different from anything I have seen here. This is also the first time I have seen the steering rack mentioned in connection with the 7th gen. To have already ordered the steering rack for you would indicate to me that they must strongly suspect the problem might be in that area. I hope the rack arrives soon, so we can find out if it permanently ends the problem.

I would be interesting in knowing the build month and year on the little silver plate inside your driver's door jamb, as well as the first eight digits of the tiny row of characters in the bottom right edge of the window sticker, if you still have that. Also, ask your service manager if they checked to confirm your car is on the recall list.

That's exactly why I try to stay away from the dealer as much as possible. If I know a particular problem is related to a recall or TSB I always print it out and take it with me for service. I actually got into a routine with my Z of calling my service advisor first and giving her the related TSB number. Then once they researched it and got up to speed I scheduled an appointment to have the repair completed.

TSB, Is that the same as the NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number?
TSB, Is that the same as the NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number?
Not exactly. I believe the actual Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) number is issued by the auto manufacturer. Each TSB and recall will also have an associated NHTSA number as well. NHTSA Item Numbers are typically associated with TSBs while NHTSA Campaign ID Numbers are typically associated with recalls. Check out this link for more info.

Excellent approach. And probably the only method that would get anywhere with many dealers.
Link below has the actual recall campaign information including service procedure and parts. This does require some work on the part of the service tech.
Those of you that have had the recall work done, can you tell us if it has fixed the problem? Apparently my Maxima is not on the recall list but I do have front end noise like a "thunking" sound.
Just got myself a new '09 Maxima a week ago or so.
Been doing some research and found about the recent recall, checked my manufacture date, and found that it's 7/09, falling within the time period eligible for the recall.
It had about 40 miles on it when I bought it, and I've driven about 400 on it since. Haven't noticed any sounds from the struts when going over any speed bumps or road bumps.
I'm leaning towards calling the dealer/service department in the morning, but I'm not sure how to approach it. I can't assume that they have replaced the faulty parts can I?

Advice?
I will guarantee you the faulty parts have not been replaced, because many dealers are still denying any knowledge of this recall, and I'm not even sure replacement parts have been shipped to dealers yet.
We have a BIG problem here, in that over 23,000 Maximas and Altimas are affected, and I am hearing it takes several hours to make this repair. You can do the math. The only thing that will save us is the fact many folks won't bother with this unless they hear a noise under the car. Even then, I would be surprised if service departments can spend hours on each of 23,000+ vehicles within the next year. I feel sure many dealers don't even have the replacement insulators yet.
You might want to go to the post that started this thread, go to the link it gives to the Nissan recall papers, print them, take the prints to your dealer and tell him you want to have this fixed as soon as he can get the replacement insulators. At least you will be on record as having requested the work, and may be one of the first ones he takes in to be repaired. Keep a log of every step you take, especially any contact with your dealer.
Of course you have the option of doing nothing, and the 'faulty' parts may never break on your car. You will know if they do break, as it makes a noticable 'pop' sound.
Sorry this hits right after you bought. Anyway, welcome to the ORG, and let us know how this recall goes for you.
I had the repair done on the car, the build date on the car is 06/09. So far the repair has worked perfectly, no more popping noise from the front struts over speed bumps or uneven surfaces. Took the dealership about 4 hours to do the repair, replaced (2) 54320-JA00A Insulators, (2) 54588-JA005 Nuts, and (4) 54588-JA060 Nuts.

Thanks for the welcome.
I actually have the recall letter that was linked emailed to myself and ready to go. I'll probably give the dealer a call this week and make my way in. I'll update on the progress.

Called the service department at the dealership and they provided me with a date when the struts were replaced (10/22/09). He is mailing me the actual invoice as we speak.

Hopefully, everything is being done honestly.
To say I am impressed is a gross understatement. I suspect many folks will not be as fortunate. With the huge number of Altimas and Maximas involved, the fact your dealer took the bull by the horns right up front, and fixed this even before the car was sold, speaks very well indeed for his attitude toward both his profession and his customers. He is the kind of dealer folks should look for when car shopping.
Of course I should add the disclaimer that the bad strut insulator may have already popped during an early test drive before you even saw the car, leaving him with no other option. But we will give him the benefit of the doubt.
At any rate, you are now in great shape. If you still get a popped insulator down the road, it will still be on Nissan.

Very good info. It should sort of let the dealer know we aren't blowing smoke when we can quote the actual part numbers involved. But 4 hours of work to fix! 4 hours times 23,000 vehicles involved is scary.
Checked my car yesterday. Sure enough she was born in July. Called the dealership and made the appointment for next wednesday since I have off for the holiday. It sounded like they weren't too familiar with this recall but they are doing it.
2.5 hrs later my car was good to go. Rattling/vibration coming from front end is no more.
That is good news. Not only is your noise gone, but, whereas the first two here on the ORG to have this work done said the dealer took around FOUR HOURS to do it, YOUR dealer made this fix in 2.5 hours. Other dealers should be able to come somewhat close to 2.5 hours also.
Received my receipt of service (previous to the purchase of the car) today. Everything looks legit to me. VIN, date of service, etc. everything looks good.
Dropped of my car this morning , Picked it up this afternoon parts installed. Drove home all seems to be well. traveled over the same speed bumps that showed the problem and no more noise. Will give it a couple of days and see what happens. For now all is well.
You mentioned you had the roof off and I wanted to ask a question. I have the SV Premium and the dealer is in the process of replacing the dual moon roof. There was a harsh knocking coming from the top when driving on bumps or on and off the curb. Do you have the model and/or issue?

Good News Everyone.. i just received my front suspension recall notice today in the mail.. it said Nissan will replace both left and right side front strut insulators with new ones. it should take about 3 hours to complete but your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule.
So all i need to do is arrange an appointment to have my car repaired....
