2009 Maxima problem
I have a problem on new 2009 Maxima with 700 miles. "Check engine light soon" light came on five days ago. Gas cap was on tight with 'three clicks'. Took it to dealer. They found nothing wrong and re-set everything. Today the light is on again. Obviously I can't contact dealer until Tuesday morning due to Labor Day. Any thoughts?

Go to AutoZone and have the code read for free.

I feel your dealer has let you down. Instead of determining why the light came on, they simply reset it, which is Like jumping into the river a second time, thinking you will not get wet like you did the first time. Dealership service departments are a car manufacturer's worst nightmare.

I beg to differ. I'm sure some folks have some problems with Maximas; ALL makes of cars give SOME trouble. But I love my 6th gen, and have had nothing done other than scheduled service for the last three years and ten months. When I see the frustrating problems my relatives, friends and neighbors always seem to be having with other cars, I thank my lucky stars I buy only Maximas.
VIVA LA MAXIMA!

this happened to me, dealer didnt close the gas cap enough, you say 3 clicks, i say 5 clicks. they checked mine, then reset it though. they should have hooked your max to the diagnostic computer. anyways try closing with 5 clicks then drive anround should go away in a couple days. do a freeway drive too

Seems like something small to overreact to, not something I would be concerned with, Nissan and all the others have their cars setup to throw a SES light if the gas cap is loose or the engine is gonna blow, seems extreme but for this exact reason they make you want to believe your car is self destructing when it's probably something as small as bad gas

Just make a quick trip to Autozone, get the code, and fix it. Isn't that hard and I doubt its anything major so don't worry.

Sometimes the light will illuminate if you fill your gas tank beyond the AUTOMATIC trigger when the pump stops...DO NOT OVERFILL your tank. My friend experienced this on his Honda Accord...he said to share this with you. I hope this helps.

Correct. Not one Maxima has been built outside Smyrna TN since the last 2003 Maxima rolled off the assembly line.

Not entirely true. The Nissan Murano and Rogue are both made in Kyūshū, Japan while the Infiniti QX56 is made in Canton, Mississippi

For the 2008 model year the QX56 was moved to Japan to try and eliminate some problems, and also add to the luxury/prestige and premium price by having it built in Japan.
I'll have to agree with tigersharkdude, the 6th gens at one time where made in Missouri or Mississippi plant but due to quality control where moved to TN, the vin number should say which plant it is made in

Error Codes
Is there a way you can push a few buttons on the dash and get the Display to go into Diagnostic Display Mode where you can scroll thru the codes and Reset them if you want?
If so a post on How-To & Code Values would really be great.

I only repeat what Nissan has said over the last five years, and told me again this year. While touring the Nissan assembly plant in Smyrna back in April, we were told that ALL Maximas were assembled in Smyrna, and had been since Maxima production began in the U.S. in January, 2003 with the first 2004s.
I have relatives in the Canton-Jackson Mississippi area, and they have told me several times they wish Nissan would make some of the Maximas in their plant, but they never have.
We have even one more way of knowing all Maximas are assembled in Smyrna: The VIN character immediately in front of the serial (which uses the last six positions of the VIN) is the ASSEMBLY PLANT ID. Nissan has around a dozen assembly plants worldwide, and uses a 'C' is this position to denote the Smyrna plant. All 6th and 7th gen Maximas I have checked have had a 'C' in this position. One can check the inventory of every Nissan dealer in the country on nissanusa, and the VINs of all Maximas I have looked at there also have a 'C' in that position.
This makes sense, as the Maxima is not a high-volume vehicle. It would be inefficient to go to the great expense of having more than one assembly line set up to build a vehicle intended to sell only around 70K copies.
