Bad CVT Fluid Change

I did a lot of research before doing this on my 2012 Maxima SV and I was confident on doing the cvt fluid change. Follow every step and replaced both the internal and external filters. Filled it up to standard and… nothing. The gears do not engage (R/D). Used Idemitsu CVT Type N (NS2) fluid, which was the better recommended.

I got codes P0868 (Low pressure) and P0826 (up/down shift).
There was no issues with the transmission prior to the change, so I think there shouldn’t be any damage. Thinking about replacing the pressure sensor and putting the original NS2 fluid from Nissan.
researched a ton and nothing related. Any guesses? please advise?

As this occured after the change, it is apparrent that the pressure is low. If occuring after all the work you did, i think either the internal screen is bad, or the level of the fill is off or maybe both.

Before taking the pan off again, i would add .5 qt of ns2 and see if it is any better. Remember to shift thru ALL the gears while still stopped, and then check fluid level. If it is still showing ok, then something is constricting the flow. I would then put the original screen back in as I had heard of the wrong screen causing pick up issues.

Thank you. I will give that a try. Do you recommend I replace the oil pressure sensor as well? Or keep the original?

Depends on the other tests, but as you had the low pressure codes before replacing the sensor, it would be the last I would replace.

Ltleary, thank you so much for your help! It did work. I ended up putting back the original screen inside the carter and added the original Nissan NS2 fluid from the dealership. Not sure which did the trick, but she came back to life!!

I really appreciate it!

Hi there! Maxima 2010 here at 91000 miles. Bought this car used in 2018 with around 57000 miles. Have been doing once a year the CVT fluid change. The first 2 times used Nissan fluid, then Idemitsu and last year Valvoline. Never replaced the screen filter that you talked about, only this last time I changed the CVT filter with an original Nissan one from my Local dealership. Never an issue. Sure, I am lucky that I do not have to drive that much in Socal, but for what is worth, never a problem with fluids other than Nissan branded ones. Glad your car is back in business.

My car just hit 200k miles and I decided to change the internal cvt filter. I bought a new filter from eBay as well as the NS3 fluid. I put everything back together and the car wouldn't move, in fact it started whining. I dropped the pan, removed the filter and compared it to the OE one. There was a very noticeable difference, in the length of the pickup tube, the number of screen cutouts and the OE screen had ridges while the new one did not. Long story short the new filter was starving the cvt of fluid due to the longer pickup tube. Never taking the trans cover off again. I used Valvoline CVT fluid that I got from Advance Auto for $36 dollars.
