Doing my first oil change: switching from conventional to full synth, is this OK?
Hi Everyone,
I'll be doing an oil change on my car tomorrow on my own, this will be the first time doing it myself. I've always paid for an oil change and have always used the basic/normal conventional oil. I'm a very conservative driver and don't really push the car that often. I'm currently at 122k miles. My GF has the same car and for some reason I feel like her car has more "pep" than mine and a bit smoother drive and she's always used full synthetic so that's why I wanted to make the switch. I recently purchased Mobil1 full synthetic and will continue to use full synthetic from here on out. My question is, do I need to do anything special or am I OK with just changing from convention to full synthetic in one oil change? Also, any tips on the oil filter? I read it gets messy because of the placement.
Thanks in advance.

Switching to synthetic is fine.
People recommend putting aluminum foil over the control arm so that any spilled oil just falls over the foil and is easily removed when finished.
The filter is more important than the oil IMO.

Changing from reg to syn won't yield any increase that you coould feel.

Oil changes are easy. Just make sure the filter is on properly. Make sure the rubber gasket/seal comes off with the old filter and use a little bit of motor oil placed on your finger to lube the gasket on the new filter before installing it on the car. Otherwise it's a pretty simple job. Good luck!!

I've changed my CVT fluid about 2 months ago. Did it myself after seeing the helpful DIY post on here, which is another reason why I wanted to start doing my own oil change, after seeing the helpful DIY on here.

Thanks for the info - any oil filter you'd recommend?

Lt,
I know you have one of the higher mileage 7th gen vehicles on here and I am sure you may have been asked this before. But can you tell me what issues you have had with your vehicle during all of those miles? What maintenance do you recommend if we want to see your mileage before the scrap yard? Did you ever have any CVT issues or main bearing knock? Thanks for your advise!
