Mismatching Front/Rear Brakes

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing Hawk HPS pads to replace my stock brakes, but can only find them for the front. Is it ok to mismatch having Hawk HPS in the front and OEM (or cheaper alternative) in the rear?

Thanks!

Sure, it's fine. Your car will never know the difference.

Not sure abour Maxima wear, but on my Altima SER, OEM rear was wearing faster than the front.

If you have to change front & rear, I'll get better than OEM for the rear.

Again, I'm only at 15000 km and I don't need to change them yet and I know Nissan rear brake wear faster...

yea Maxima's brake mostly on the rear wheels to prevent nose diving, so they'll most likely go first. you can have different sets of pads on the front and rear, i have EBC green stuff on the rear and OEM on the front. only difference is my rear wheels are ALWAYS dirty looking - don't go with EBC green stuff lol

Thanks, I wasn't aware that our cars are so reliant on the rear as I've found most others seem to emphasize the front pads. It sounds like my approach will work, but just in the opposite, better than OEM in the rear, OEM or slightly better in the front.

Thanks again.

Not a problem to mix brakes front and back.

I never knew our rear brake pads wear out faster than the fronts. Is that really true and common or just happens occasionally?

I need to replace my pads and feels like fronts have worn out, more than the rears. Well, I can't tell rears are worn out more. I remember Nissan did check for me and told me fronts need replacement soon, but rears are ok.

I am asking just to informed. I will not be mismatching pads, though. Since I am replacing all 4 at the same time with Wagner ceramic thermoquiets.

I've looked into this myself and Ghozt's reply is pretty accurate. Since these cars have EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), the harder you stop on the brake pedal, the more force is sent to the rear, helping to reduce nose squat and keeping the car level under harsh braking. So if you're a driver that waits until the last second to brake, you're going to see this happen time and time again.

While I drive my car hard on the twistys, during normal driving I coast a lot, anticipate people braking, and ease into the brake pedal. After 27K, the fronts and rears have almost identical pad wear (rears having a hair less friction material).
