Exhaust input from the technically inclined
First off i'd like to say that when it comes to knowledge of how cars work i know next to nothing. Give me some parts and i can put them on, but the actual technical knowledge is something that i do not have so please forgive me if this is a completely idiotic question.
I previously owned a 350z and i loved the way the exhaust sounded. It would be great to get the same sound out of the max. Considering they have the same engine isn't it theoretically possible to use the 350/370 exhaust parts to replicate the sound? I'm sure if it is possible that's an extremely simplified way of saying it, but i'm just curious if it's even possible at this point.
Or maybe they do sound similar already and i just haven't taken the time to pull up sound clips of stock Maxima exhaust. From what i could tell in a parking garage downtown this past weekend with the windows down it didn't sound anything like the 350 did though *shrugs*

I've been trying to find a way to replicate the sound of a G35 coupe and 350Z myself because i love that low growl they have from the factory. Below you can see a stock 350Z exhaust on the left, and a Stillen true-dual on the right. The muffler design for the inlet and outlets are quite different than the stock Max setup.

For a stock, N/A 3.5, I think 3" is way too big unless you've got a TT or SC setup. I'd rather not lose the little bit of low-end torque we have. 2.5 or 2.75 is perfect for N/A motors plus you won't have a ridiculous amount of drone or resonance inside the cabin.

It's exactly that. Custom built for your car exhaust.
Expensive? Not much if at all more than any exhaust out there. Not to mention there is NO 3" exhaust for the 7th gen. It's all 2.5".
Our engines need to breath and 3" helps.
Google search for "custom mandrel bent exhaust (your city here)" and see what comes up.
When I type something like that for my area I get the only place that does it.

If you've ventured into the other generation Maxima areas you'll see that 3" is actually a gain over 2.5"..yes generally on a smaller engine you won't want it unless you're running FI (SC,TC,Nitrous). My car has a great sound, and so do many of the 5.5 gens that have the cattman 3" exhaust.

I wil definatley do that. I am guessing that there has to be some shops around here (south florida) that will do it.

i dont have a nasty drone, i got obx headers, a magnaflow resonator, and muffler....3" piping otherwise....hallow cat....sounds just pretty....and your car has better sound proofing than mine so i wouldnt worry about it!

Wow, I'm impressed! You mind me asking how much the shop charged for all the materials and labor? I've considered going 2.75'' custom SS exhaust, just trying to figure out the right mufflers to use. Magnaflow's do have a nice tone, but also like the Borla Type-S sound too.

Even though deep down its the same motor as the 350Z (except for the HR version), the exhaust tone won't be exactly the same even if you use the same muffler as the 350. The VQ35 and VQ37's in the Z's have different header designs than our 7G Max.

Again, probably a stupid question but it sounds like replacing headers is relatively easy? If that's the case couldn't we just swap 350/370 headers for the ones on the Max? Again i'm working off of the assumption that since it's the same engine the 350/370 headers would fit? 350/370 headers, some custom piping, and a 350/370 muffler?
Exhaust Header installs aren't as easy as you might think. Very little room around the manifolds to install them with the motor in the car. This link to the 350Z Borla headers shows you that the design is for longitudinally mounted engines instead of the transverse setup in our FWD cars. Header designs have to be on point so that they maximize the extraction of exhaust from each cylinder. Would definitely leave this to the pros

I'd certainly be willing to go custom as long as it sounds the way i want it to. I hate the tin can go kart on crack sound that a lot of exhaust gives. I was just thinking of a swap since i KNOW that i want my car to sound like my 350 did. I'd have no idea how a custom setup would sound until the cash was spent and the exhaust was on.
