Do it yourself oil change

I am about to change my own oil. I have not been under the car yet, are there any tips or problems that have occured that would be nice to know before I ramp it and crawl under her? Is the filter easy to get to?

Hello,

Look for my post within this thread.

Just make sure you don't break the plastic push pin that holds the strap in place.

Here is a picture of what it looks like. Sorry that the picture is huge.

I hope this helps.

Did my first change today. Thanks for the tip BigDog . It was pretty simple. The cover over the oil filter is actually the front passenger wheel well cover. It unstrapped easily and filter was easy to get to, right at the bottom, near the drain plug. I paid 54 bucks for the Ester oil change...(friends at the "ship) including filter. I used a full 5 qts

FYI, I saw ester oil on ebay yesterday for 7 bucks a qt!

Im not trying to "hog" this post, but had a question if anyone knew that kinda relates to the topic.

You know how our maintenance default are manually set to 3k, 6k, 9k etc in the info/maintenance setting in the GPS, does the computer remind you based on the settings for an oil change, or is it based off something else? I hit 3,012 miles yesterday and everytime i turned on the car it got "change oil filter" message on my dash, and had to manually get out of it. I was curious if i make the next default 7k miles, i will not get this "warning" message until then, or will i get it again at 6k. Its very annoying.

It will be reset and not "alarm you until the interval set by you has been reached. So if you have 3400 Miles on the car and reset it, with a 7000 interval, then It will not alert you until 10400.

I am doing my first oil changes on 3K, 6K, 10K(Syn Oil). So I have reset mine at 2900 with a 3000 interval. That way at 5900, I will get the message and that will remind me to go purchase the supplies and look for a window in the next day or two to do it. I have my tire rotations set at 5K, 10K, 15K and so on, with similar "lead time" as well. Those of us with Navi can set the schedules in the "Maintenance" section as well as in the Speed Odo Info display. So I set them on the Navi Maintenance section at 250 miles over, thus if I reset them on the Speedo and forget to do the work, it will remind me one more time.

cool i was hoping that would be the case. the blinking orange warning was getting on my nerves.

how did the oil change doing it yourself go? i purchased the service maintenance plan so i end up only paying about $45 an oil change which is worth it to just get it done. using nissan's "special" oil of course.

I got my first oil change on Friday, and it was done by the dealer. First Oil change was free, so I thought why not. On the next oil change I will be doing it myself, and adding the Fumoto drain valve in the mix as well.
