FYI: 5 spd VLSD axle fittment issues
Long story short, a drivers side axle for a 96-99 I30t VLSD does not fit a 4th gen with an 01 AE VLSD. The I30t axle is 1" shorter in length. The I30t part was a day wait, the AE was 4 days out. Live and learn.
Advanced Auto GSP axle part numbers:
96-99 I30t NCV53567
2001 AE NCV53619
Advanced Auto GSP axle part numbers:
96-99 I30t NCV53567
2001 AE NCV53619

I had a similar issue with mine when I swapped in a VLSD from and 96-99 I30t. The axle kept popping out from the bellhousing even with the wheels put on the car.
Ended up putting three washers on the passenger supporting bracket to give it about 1/4" extra space, which seemed to do the trick. Not totally sure why but was always wondering, so I'd be interested to see why this is.

I have swapped between AT maxima and I30 MT VLSD axles for the passenger side and had no issues.

When I went to buy an axle I searched and came up with everyone stating they used the I30 axle. Since it was faster to get the I30 axle I went with it. Side by side the GSP I30 was shorter than the OEM 2001 AE axle, but all the splines and grooves lined up. I installed it anyway just to check. The moment I inserted the outer end into the hub I new it was not going to work. It stretched the inner CV boot as if the joint was ready to come apart inside. So back to the parts store I went and ordered the AE axle. Exact same length as the OEM. Fit perfect, just had to stretch the cir clip that keeps the inner splines seated in the tranny.

maybe there was a problem with that particular axle then? i and others have used i30 axles in our AE transmissions. there was no difference, and no issue whatsoever.
not that it's completely authoritative, but autozone's website lists the length of the axles when fully compressed as being the same also even though they give a different part number.
maybe they gave you an altima VLSD axle (either mislabeled or whatever). those are shorter.

First of all, I know this is an old thread
Were you also using a GSP axle?
Was the AE axle also a GSP?
I am asking because I am having trouble with my third gen left axle poping out and I am wondering if it is a GSP thing.

When I bought the AE tranny back in 05? I got the original axle with it. I broke the axle at the track so I ordered a new GSP from Advance Auto. The I30 VLSD was a day wait and didnt fit for me. I reordered a GSP AE axle and intalled with little fuss. I do have a slight MTF leak now, however. I even replaced the seal.
