Okay so i have searched and ive only really found one maybe possible solution. My drivers door sags. It doesnt not line up like it should with the drivers rear pass door. I think the hinge pin is shot on it but im not really sure what it is. It has vertical play in it and i know it can be adjusted but i dont have the proper tools for it. The car has never been in an accident so i think its just over time that it happens. How much would a new hinge pin cost? im assuming its the whole hinge assembly. also if i were to go to a body shop, how much should i be looking at to be charged saying that i provided the part? thanks.

My drivers door sags about 1/4 inch and is close to rubbing the body also...I went to the dealer and an autobody shop and I have concluded that I am going to replace both the upper/lower hinges on the door.. They are roughly $30 from the dealer then you have to have an autobody shop paint them to match...I am looking for a total of around $100 after install...Also adjusting the "striker" on body frame is an option but nissan is known for making cheap hinges and many people have had to replace the drivers door hinges... Just make sure when you/or the autobody shop replaces the hinges to not unplug the drivers door because you may get some CEL's after this....My 2 cents...

what do you mean by not unplugging it? its that for the air bags? also my dome light doesnt go out on the "door" setting due to the drivers door sagging.

I have the same issue, only mines makes a little chirp when slamming shut.

I feel like I'm closing the door to a small plane...at least I know it's heavily equipped with some solid steel.

this looks like a commom problem with the maximas. any TSBs on it? i havent seen any and mine is a 02. Like stated before, i think the hinges from factory are very low quality and a list of other things. What they shouldve done is built the car in America and all wouldve been well and the paint wouldve been nice.

My cousin just bought a 2k2 and it Sags also... but i've had multiple 4th gen max's and never had that problem... ( Nissan is geting cheaper and cheaper)

I admit though, that 3.5 does do its job!

maybe it was the plant that had bad hinges, because i dont see any issues with the other doors but i guess its because the drivers door is the primary door being used on a daily basis.

Both my driver and passinger front doors sag so I think the only solution is to do a set of lambos this next winter season.

you will NEVER have problem with those. that will be way easier then dealing with doors that sag a little bit

I specifically looked for J vin cars because I have a bias for cars manufactured there. BTW, anyone know what the process is like for painting the cars? I'm sure they have it sealed up pretty well so location, season manufactured shouldn't matter...

^^how do you push it up and make it stay? i always thought that once its out of alignment due to shotty pins, that you would just have to replace them.

Mine sags but only when open, for now when it closes it rests on the lock. That's begining to wear too. So to keep from hearing the crunch. I lock the door and pull up on the handle when closing from the outside and push up on the door with my other hand when closing from the inside. By the time I noticed this it was too late to start lubing the hinges... doh.

On the 2000 I just bought, the RF door is pretty noticable when closing and I think the LF is sagging slightly also.

Any fix for this? Replace the hinge pins?

FYI, sometimes the door latch on the b-pillar gets out of line (not the door).
when you close the door it grinds on the latch making you think its the door sagging. that latch can be adjusted.

Its my second 02 and both had door sagging issues. Im planning on changing the hinges.

my 01AE had this problem too. i had a half inch of play in the door and they said it was the hinges and pins both causing the problem, but i got lucky in a way lol, driver door got caved in by a silverado 1500 while it was parked out side my house, so i got the whole thing replaced for free.

i have this problem too but not as severe. The door makes a thud sound when i shut it close. Its misaligned with the latch by just a bit. I'll try realigning the latch with the door to see if it makes a difference.

EDit: what do u call the other hinge type pieces b'/w the top and bottom hinges?

Had this issue, had the body shop replace the hinges. Latches up perfectly now.

had the same issue with driver side. went and picked up the hinges for about 30 bucks each. painted them and put them on in my driveway. not too hard. just took some time to get it aligned just right.

My '03 def sags just a tad but the wifes '01 is solid. It is the hinge pins-my 98 alti had the same prob but that one was bad...it had gone way into the bare metal on the top rear door.

Its a known issue..but not addressed really

I had that issue on my previous 4th gen. I resolved it by cutting a couple of "plates" out of plastic milk jugs, the size of the bottom hinge mounting plate (the side that attaches to the body of the car). Punched somes holes to align with those of that plate and inserted on the back of it. Worked for me.

My door sags as well, but not enough for me to want to spend a lot of effort to fix it.

I "realigned" the door on an old Sentra years ago by opening the door slightly, and jacking up the door with the jack that you use to change a flat tyre. I used a longish piece of wood between the jack and the bottom of the door, and applied pressure at the point furthest away from the hinge. I did it a little at a time, releasing the jack to check the alignment until the door was lined up and there was no more rubbing.

I haven't tried this on my Maxima though. Your mileage may vary!

My 2000 SE had the same problem, I back out the nuts on the bottom hinge and stopped before they came off the bolts. I had someone lift up on the door to seperate the hinge from the door frame, and stuck some aluminum shims between the hinge and the door. I would guess that it was about an 1/8" shim. Tightened it back up and the door aligned perfect. cost...$0.00 because I had the aluminum laying around.

Similar to the milk jug plate suggestion!!

Neither my 2003 or 2002 has this issue. I did a full driver door replacement on my 1997 SE after an accident and while everything is loose, you just align it to perfection and tighten it up throughly. [You may need to do it a few times until the alignment at the top is perfect.] You'll need two people....one for holding the weight of the door and someone else to tighten. I don't see why that wouldn't fix this problem on your existing door unless it's a true equipment failure.

My dealer resolved the problem by adjusting the latch. That might be one thing to look into if anyone doesn't want to unbolt the hinged.

I've had a 1996 Maxima and now I have a 2002 Maxima.
Both had the door sagging issue. Both exactly the same.. both cars the same color ( I don't think that the color of the car has anything to do with the issue at hand but I might be wrong ) ...

Can someone put a link for the part I will need (its driver side front ... looks like I need a hinge) ...

I shimmed mine. There are posts on this typical issue with our 5th Gen.

No saggy anymore. My driver door used to bang and hit the latch bad, after the shim, all good!

I agree 110% with you. I've owned a 4th gen and it seemed to be built much better than my 2002. My drivers side door sags, the road noise is outragious, leather isn't comfortable, truck mat sags, etc...

BUT, that 3.5 makes all the cheapness go away...! Plus, where can I find another car for $7k (under 100k miles) that goes like this one and is reliable?
