2004 Maxima SL tranny/camshaft problems
I complained about my transmission at 20K, at 40K & at 80K. All times dealer says no problems. Then at 120K it got so bad I took it in to dealer. They put in a rebuilt transmission for their cost. One wk later my Service Engine light came on. Back to dealer and they now say my camshaft sensors are bad. Another $446 and two wks after that, Serv. Eng. light on again. Back to dealer and now they are saying that both camshaft sprockets are stuck and not adjusting as they should. Quote of $4000 to tear down engine and rebuild. I said no and they said my car may last two months to two years. Anyone have any insights for me. We are seniors and can't afford another car.

The gen 6 have a lot issues and arguably the start of the demise of the Maxima model. Altima up-sized around gen 5 era, Nissan and Renault relationship, American made etc etc.
Your cheapest option long term solution is to really buy something else. If you really want to keep your car try www.car-parts.com and find a gen 6 engine.
If the car has CVT the transmission warranty was increased but if it's a automatic you are out of luck even though the automatic are known to be problematic as well.
Sorry for the negative tone of this post
Maybe you can find a Infiniti M45 (2005–2010), Toyota Avolan or something? They will be much more reliable even though the initial upfront costs will be a bit more than a gen 6 Maxima.

I agree with George. I bought my 2004 because of the history of Nissan. I wish I would have bought something else. The new engineering seemed to cause a lot of issues.
I had a 2003 and a 2004 to choose from. I chose the 2004 because it had not timing belt. (LOSE)!
Transmission issues and sensor issues abound.
