I wouldn't buy a 6th gen with the 5-speed automatic, and yes, I have a 5-speed automatic. Just to sum up the issues I've had, failing tranny, blown pre-cats, bad EGR valve, bad fuel pump, leaking AC hose, bad timing chain tensioners and excessive oil burning (possibly due to the blown pre-cats). This all happened before 70K miles, luckily under extended warranty.

Personally i would not get a 6th gen, or even any Maxima 5th gen and above. I say that because Nissan had switched everything around in around year 2000 and build quality has just went downhill from there. And the last Maxima's made in Japan are the 4th gens... so go figure

Nope, last Japanese built were 5.5's

6th gens are nice but possible auto tranny issues and timing chain parts to be replaced. Alot depends on price of car and if known issues have been addressed already.

Bought a 2006 auto 20 months ago,,,,had 27,000 miles on it,,,,at 57,000 now,,,, no issues at all yet besides radio reception,,,,and the CD player locking up now and then.

But I have Sirius,,,,so dont care

I bought a 110,000 mile warranty just in case though which means I will have zero problems LOL

I have a 06 SE with the auto tranny. Overall I can't complain I got it at 38k 3 years ago and I have 92k now. The only issues I've had are....starting with first to last.

-Cat conv went out at 76k (replaced under nissans 80k cat warranty)
-All 3 motor mounts
-Tranny felt like it was slipping so they replaced the valve body and changed the filter and fluid (also under warranty)
-radiator fan motor went bad
-high pressure AC hose

All in all its really been a great car. Never left me stranded or really given me any major problems. But I've gotta be honest...if I could do it again I would have looked harder for a 6 speed but they are extremely hard to find. I read that only %2 of the 06's were 6 speeds. Good luck with finding whatever your looking for

blah blah blah... all i hear in here is snot nose whining by a bunch of Nancy boys..

I have a 6th gen, 130k now, 5 speed auto and it is as reliable as a paper air plane. I haven't had a single problem that wasn't self inflicted. I drive the crap out of my maxima too. Abuse it like a punching bag and nothing. I've said it a thousand times, and ill say it again... the transmission problem with the 6th gen is NOT as prevalent as everyone makes it out to be. I won't deny there is a problem, and there are definitely enough people with problems to raise awareness when shopping for a 6th gen. But get this.. roughly 3% of all maximas sold have claimed a defective valve body. OK 3 F***ing % somehow this site has attracted 99.99% of that 3% and all they do is B**** and moan about it like all the other cars in this world are made in the heavens of car perfection... cars have problems, the maxima is not an exception. If you want a few years of worry free guarantee buy something new with a warranty.

I swear, the 6th gen and the transmission problem is like the liberals using the elementary school shooting in Connecticut to further demonize assault weapons...... WHEN THE ASSAULT WEAPON WAS NEVER USED!!! F****** $%#! @#@#& $$(#&$ !(&($&@)! FUC* B***#

pisses me off man...

this world is going to hell in a hand basket by a bunch of politically correct, left wing, anti gun, anti American, anti freedom, no brained, dim witted, over privileged, ignorant, self entitled, simpleton, neanderthals, who don't know jack *** about the events in our history or the history of the rest of the world and why tens of thousands of people died in the name of freedom to instil the U.S. constitution to protect our country against bull S*** like this! And what happens? the STUPID Americans in this country let it all go to SHI* like a back yard tool shed. YOUR.... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU........ GAHH!!! I am installing spikes and meat cleavers on my maxima and charging full speed into all those who oppose! If you want dictatorship! ill give you dictatorship! under the wheel of my maxima of death you shall do as i say, stupid Americans all wanna be lead like sheep to the butcher. can't stand up for what is right because gradualism is just too dam sneaky for your tiny little brains...

We live in a world where a man (ex marine core) 2 years ago defended his life and his families lives with a gun in New York against two armed robbers who fired multiple times first. He RETURNED fire and sacked one of the murderous robbers and then went to jail for felony firearm possession, and 2nd degree murder. He sits there today, and for what? defending his life? protecting his kids and wife? don't we have the right in America to defend our own lives? Well apparently not in New York, there people want you too fight a gun wielding criminal with your baseball bat..

Making guns illegal will stop criminals from having them???? we should make heroin and meth illegal too!!!

so your interested in a 6th gen maxima. I would say go ahead and buy one. Test drive it. If the max has shifting problems don't buy it, if it doesn't your chances of getting a time bomb are equally proportionate to getting one with any other car, make, or model. Like i said before no car is an exception to problems, I consider the maxima a safer bet than any other similarly priced and performance/luxury oriented sedan.

20, You've got to be the only poster I've ever seen, who could manage to successfully lace a general 6th gen answer with an angry gun control rant. Just when I thought I'd seen it all..... Well done, sir.

They are actually pretty safe and no issues, I think i may have heard about ONE person who did a valve body job. Really again no issues with 6sp. If you are in the market, I would try to get atleast an 2006 manual. We all know 04s are famous for issues (auto). I believe and its just my opinion the 06 is the safest with regards to repairs. Again 6spd is pretty safe from 04, its the auto but **** i look at it as hey they had a year to fix all the problems with the tranny lol

Now not sure if you have kids but there is the Elite version of the maxima, basically its fully loaded and its a 4 seater. NICEEEEEE Google it. Its pretty rare

Here's an 07 - CVT

cvt is so the way to go. you stay in the power band and never leave. people dont realize how much this helps to go fast with less and throttle reponse is instant since theres no downshift and no shift shock to ruin things

my cvt has 128k on it the only issue the car has had with me since 70k is 1 bad wheel bearing.

If the transmission is something you are hesitant about, test drive the 07-08 CVT. It may not be everyones cup of tea, but you may jst like it. Test drive it with open mind and not what others are saying about it. I have an 08 and only main issue has been with the tensioners going out at about 84-85,000. Well, atleast that's when I repaired it. It sent me back $,$$$. It fck'n hurted Bro.

Don't do it unless you have plenty of cash on hand to fix the problems you'll likely face. Where do I begin, things to look out for and approx costs:

-Rear subframe replacement (dealer recall, probably thousands)
-Vibrating steering wheel (never able to pin down the problem nor did i sink money into this, many have tried and failed to identify root cause, so the car drives like a junker when you are going 55MPH)
-Control Arms ($800)
-ABS Actuator ($1500)
-ABS Sensors ($200 each)
-Multiple areas of rust bubbling up as early as 5 years old (Varies)
-Sky View roof panel faulty (Can shatter) (recall)
-Radio (HD unit is garbage, wont play CDs, $500)
-Lumbar (Broke 2x (1st time was first mo. owned, new), never fixed the 2nd time, prob $200)
-Side mirrors (lost full power range of movement, ?)
-Extremely loud squeeling of belts at 130,000 (Not sure replacement cost, i traded at this point)
-Faulty goodyear RSA tires with cracked sidewalls when car was new
-Heat stopped working in the winter, blower motor resistor ($80)
-I probably forgot some stuff....all the above occured from a 2004 bought new and traded at 130,000 in 2012. It could have been worse but im not intrested in repeating it.
