Transmissions for 04-06 and 07-08

I'm considering buying myself a Maxima within the next two years and I've been skimming through the 6th gen forums at work. I've gathered two things from my reading:

04-06 Maximas apparently might have some sort of chronic transmission failure?

The 07-08 Maximas have CVT and it is really a love/hate type of deal.

I have two questions:

1. Are the 04-06 transmissions really prone to failure?

2. Performance wise(in terms of acceleration) how does the CVT and the 5 speed auto of 04-06 Maxime SE's stack up against each other?

I guess I'll toss in a 3rd question, how does either transmission respond to modifications? I assume that both might need a transmission cooler at some point.

Thanks in advance.

haven't drove a maxima with a cvt but I had rental Rogue that I absolutely hated i only picked it up b/c i wanted to put a couple of hundreds miles on it and see what the CVT was about plus my company was paying for rental anyhow...
You did know that the 6th gen also came in a manual correct? it is extremely rare but there is an option to have manual

Yeah, I do know that it came in a manual but I'm too lazy to shift my own gears.

Yes, the tranny is pretty weak (minus manual), plus sometimes its the valve body that goes bad so. I would stay away from 04-06

Rent a cvt max or altima for a day and see for yourself, some love cvt some hate it. I like it because i am a cruiser not a racer (i own an 08). The CVT has a warranty to 120k so pretty darn good to me.

My buddy has an 07, with all bolt on mods, headers, full exhaust, kinitex manifold, ported lower IM, intake, mashimato(sp) radiator and tranny cooler, tuning and most importantly LOL NOS. All on a CVT,

Thanks in advance.
To be honest I would say the 07-08 are pretty reliable and i havent heard of lots of problems unlike the04-06. Definitely rent a CVT,make sure its a 6cl not a 4cl. Make your decision if you would like it or not. Good Luck
