Catalytic converter question

so i went to the emissions place the other day and my 2006 maxima with 87,000 failed. i have had the check engine light on (constant) for some time which means there is an emissions problem. i was hoping it would be an O2 sensor because it would go off every now and then. also when i would be on the highway and get on the gas hard i could smell that sulfur smell. and the car idled weird several times when i would come to a stop ( a total of less than 10 times) the emissions place pulled a code PO420 which is a Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1. so after all the signs and the code being pulled i have a pretty good ideal it is a catalytic converter problem and not a sensor. i have seen in other threads that there are 3 catalyst converter on 2006 max. does this code mean it could be any three of the catalytic converters? also after looking online i see there are many different types and applications for the 2006 max. i havent poked my head under the car to see if it is a bolt or weld(if that is even the right one....). can anyone lead me in the right direction to buying a decent catalytic converter for a decent price. i talked to advanced auto and they said they had a universal catalytic con. for $200. i talked to an auto shop and they said anywhere between 600-1200, and the cheaper CC are junk. i am looking for an easy swap. can anyone help?

If you're getting the Catalytic Converter CEL, then your pre-cats are probably failing. I'm not sure how long the light's been on, but if you search, you'll see this is a fairly common issue for our cars. You need to take care of the problem ASAP...the honeycomb material inside the Cat is breaking down, and if any gets sucked into your engine, then you're going to be screwed.

At this point, some guys go with afermarket headers, which will eliminate the pre-cats, and thus the problem. Although, you may get an 02 related CEL with a header swap. Your other option is the new Racingline High-Flow pre cats:

Whichever way you decide to go, DO NOT wait too long.

Yeah your precats in the headers are going... get the Racingline high flow cats. Direct bolt-on replacement.

I wasn't that lucky, my warranty on catalytic had expired 11 months before costing me just under $2,000 at dealer.
