Got new tranny for my 04 Maxima from Nissan of Manhattan under extended warranty
Hello all i have a black 2004 Nissan Maxima with 87k on the clock. I was having some transmisision trouble and recently got the tranny replaced for $50 due to the Gold extneded plus warranty, the extneded warranty is ending inJune but i am told the tranny from Nissan is good for one year/12k miles Anyhow the tranny is great although i think i may need motor mounts from driving with the car with a bad tranny for so long.
Anyhow i plan to change the fluid every 30.000 miles. I am wondering if i should change it 15k the first time?
Anyhow i noticed my last tranny acted up when the oil got hot. I came across this tranny cooler.

I am wondering how you guys feel about this cooler as i want to prolong its life. Thank you so much guys.

Just curious - when coasting to a stop, are any of your downshifts still a little harsh? After my rebuild (which failed after 250 miles), my 3-2 downshift still had a bump. Also, did nissan give you any specific instructions as far as breaking in the new transmission? (ie stay under 60mph, etc) ?
Thanks
Thanks

New Rebuild
Just had my tranny replaced at 53000 miles, went in for a belt change and the mech recommended a tranny replacement before the warranty went. I guess he did me a favor however the new tranny is a little rough on down shifts. Nissan needs to Man up and fix them correctly. I treat my car very well do all the maintenance I don't drive it hard.

****ttt nissan man up and fix there mistake. NEVER WILL HAPPEN. i have a 2004 max SE. I had mt tranny replaced at 58000 (under warranty) and my new tranny is worse than the old tranny. had them replace it 3 times. and it still feels a lil rough on the downshif. went to a diff mechanic and found out i needed a moter mount.WOW u think Nissan would have seen that i needed a mount. but ever since tranny been a lot better. and to answer your question Nissan told me at least 3000 miles to break in the new tranny

get the shift kit and call it a day. Without the shift kit you can bet on replacing your transmission again. As for the tranny cooler get something at least 18,000 btu. I drive hard and intend to get a 28-40k btu cooler. Also Transgo makes the shift kit which will fix the harsh shifting and reduce the wear on your transmission. Nissan covers 1 year on the tranny but seems to go bad about that time. I recommend changing your tranny fluid every 10-15k miles or every year, no matter how many miles you have on it. I think 150 dollars a year on preventive maintenance is alot better than 3000 because you waited for 30k miles. If you go to a Nissan dealer they will tell you 60k miles is when to change your tranny fluid, but if you look in the service manual it says 30k miles. I think they don't have a clue and when it comes down to it, you pay for it in the end. Ohh without the shift kit and only getting the cooler you are just covering up the problem. The fluid will stay cool and last longer but the shifting will still be harsh. The harsh shifting is cause by a delay in fluid shifting the gear. The heat makes it worse because the fluid becomes thinner/less viscous. Cooler, Shiftkit, Full Sythetic AMSOIL tranny fluid.

You should unless you already spent your money taken your car to a nissan dealer that would of helped you due to the short time of the warranty expiring, if you would have looked hard enough with a little luck and carefully explaining your issue you most likely would of found that they would of coverd it under good faith repair. It takes you finding the right dealer that has sympathy.

Ahem~! Just found out that the shift kit costs $250 and there's about $700 big ones for the labour to install this...then there's the cooler another $500 installed...your talking almost $1,500 including the synth fluid..wow! But I guess that's half of a rebuilt tranny...
How does this affect our warranty...my extended expires at the end of this year and my tranny was changed at about 105k kms...I now have 140K kms....
