I am having the same transmission problems 1st-2nd jerk and when downshifting 2nd-1st jerk/bang, 2nd-3rd slip after I drive it long enough for it to heat up took to transmission shop (Amco) today and the code P0797 Pressure control solenoid sensor came up, these people were telling me that I need my entire transmission rebuilt. I am a single mom and I need to get my car fixed this is my only source of transportation. I was wondering if getting the valve body rebuilt would solve the problems??

IMO I would buy the Transgo Kit, have the valve body rebuilt which is way less costly, does not require the transmission to be dropped and even if it does not totally fix it you would have already completed something that had to be done anyway. Not to mention buy your transmission some more time.

Last, maybe it's just me but I would steer clear of AMMCO places. In my opinion they are the Jiffy Lube of transmisson repair...

hey guys, so I purchased the transgo kit for $100 locally in Houston, and now i brought the kit to a family friend mechanic who works at a Lexus dealership. I was wondering if this job requires a transmission specialist? because he and his friend seem pretty confident in being able to do the job correctly and put everything back together orderly. he is asking for $350, is this reasonable?

I also own a 2004 SE, 95K miles, 5 speed AT with the same problems (1-2 jerk, 2-1 jerk/bang, 2-3 slip started about 3K miles ago) and am working with a local transmission shop - they tell me they have no idea what the problem is (no codes) and will "research" and call me. I will print this entire forum and bring it to them on Monday... am hoping it's as simple as installing the Transgo kit that Athlon and Pimp speak of... wish me luck!

So if I understood correctly, installing the Transgo kit first is the way to go? If it doesn't fix the problem, then go to the Valve Body rebuild? Sorry guys... I'm just a simple girl with no automotive sense. I love my car as much as you guys but have no idea how it works!

Thank you though for taking the time to share all of your findings... hopefully this will solve my problem as well.

this is essentially a valvebody rebuild, by adding a shift kit. there are other parts out there for the valvebody, but i don't think replacing those are needed. when you talk with the tech, just tell them you want a transgo shift kit installed and the going rate everyone is getting it done for is 250 to 350 not including parts. this way you don't get ripped off. good luck.

for the rest of you, this thread would be much more helpful with phone numbers and cost from the places you are getting these kits.

UPDATE: The tech called me back today and tells me I have a "valve body problem" and need a complete rebuild ($4300) OR to purchase a REMAN transmission ($3600). WOW - the things they try to do to women in these shops is awful LOL. Well, I told him that I'd like to try the shift kit first as this has resolved this same issue for other maxima owners. He told me I was wasting my money so I decided to take my business elsewhere. A friend referred me to another shop and when I called and spoke to the tech I was delighted to discover that he is another proud maxima owner!! We spoke at length about the Transgo kit and are both confident that this is indeed the way to go. What a blessing!
So Pimp... thank you for your feedback. I just purchased the Transgo shift kit locally for $95 - kit comes in Wednesday so my baby will go in the shop Thursday... I'll let you all know how it works out and what the total cost is once I know.

Wish me luck!!

What tranny shop was trying to rip you off? That'll be great info for other members that may happen to be close by... so they do NOT give them any business.

Pro Transmissions in Worcester, MA - he didn't even want to talk about anything more than a rebuild or purchasing a REMAN. Told me "don't waste your money" so I asked... if the Transgo kit is indeed the solution, wouldn't rebuilding be a waste? He stuttered, lol.

Thank God! This thread is such a blessing to find... I have an 04 SL.. i know it is a 4spd and alot of discussion here involves the SE 5spd a/t... I have been told I need a whole new tranny by the dealer and did some research of my own and found that a new Valve Body would fix it... for now. This shift kit looks very promising and alot CHEAPER!!!! Is the TransGo Performance RE4F04B-HD2 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TR...n/?prefilter=1) the shift kit I need for my 4spd SL? I am taking it to the trans shop on WEDS and would like to have an alternative to the VBA replacement. The guy was really helpful and nice so I am optimistic he would be willing to work with me on this shift kit installment! I need some feedback asap on the TransGo kit for my SL 4spd before I wonder in there WEDS! Thanks guys!

lol.... it is a 4spd right? HELP!!

I am sure someone else can verify that that specific kit will work for your 4sp:

Make NISSAN
Transmission Type 4F20E
Beginning Year 2000
Ending Year 2004

Awesome! Thank you guys so much, hopefully that will work, I hate driving in fear about pushing my car and ruining my tranny. Hope to hear something before weds... so the 4spd SL and the 5spd SE have the same terrible valve body or? Hopefully someone can explain these things to me a little, i'd hate to be taken for $$ i really can't spare.

From what I understand, different valve body, but the parts that are causing the problem are teflon coated, and when they heat up, they expand, and get stuck, which gives you the rough shifting.

You should be fine driving your car. Just don't treat it like a Formula 1.

Guys I have been following this thread and I need some direction. I spent $4500 on a tranny. My shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st is not smooth. It slams lightly and sometime the shifting between the 2 gears is not smooth. What exactly do I need for my tranny to get it smooth again? My Max is an 05 and it is an automatic. Please help. Thanks

I am seeing a couple of you guys posting that you spent $100 and less on this kit. Is it the kit and not the reaming tool you guys are buying? If so how are your shops putting it in? Is there a cheaper alternative than using the reaming kit they sell? I was thinking about getting a reaming set for my tool collection and figured this might be something someone can do with a bench clamp and a remer kit you could get at sears for a fraction of the cost.

The kit includes the tool. My tech sent my valve body to a transmission guy in town to install the kit and use the tool as they themselves didn't want to take chances and damage it.

krt: I would call Transgo directly to make sure I was getting the right kit. That's what I did prior to getting mine.

So this transgo kit includes the remer to do the installl? How much did you pay for your kit? Where did you purchase it? What is the phone number to the place you got your kit from?

Yeah I went to the Transgo website http://www.transgo.com/sk_nissan.php and didn't see the RE5F22A kit there. Probably something we have to call and order?

Talked with a guy named Jack at transgo who was very familiar with this problem in the maximas and he was extremely helpful. he said they make a kit for my 4spd SL and it is the fix for the 1-2 2-3 stutter 2-1 downshift jerking i experience when my car has been running for a minute. thank God!! Off to the tranny shop tomrw to get this process going! YAH!

Hello guys, I am new to the site and I am in the same boat with the RE5F22A problem. I called transgo and was told this will cure the issue but I was told to let the mechanic buy it, Im fine with that...... My question is Who can I trust to buy and install this kit? I live in VA. Beach Virginia and I have never had to go to a tranny repair shop. Any help would be great. BTW, I will not go to AAMCO or Cottman, my family has had issues in the past with them. Thanks, John G.

i'd go commercial with a shop. That way everything is warranted and there's no B.S. case they mess up. Me, myself went to Lee Myles Transmission. Waiting to hear my price quote tomorrow.

regardless of which trans you have, they make a shift kit for both. Also have you checked your motor mounts yet?

anyone can look at your motor mounts and tell you if they need replaced. Motor mounts are an either "they need replaced" or "they are fine". nothing in between. anyone can look at them, if you are unsure just have a mechanic take a quick look. should cost you nothing to do.

i recently did all four mounts on my car. You'll notice a horrible shift shock, grinding noise, hear engine shake when you start up. non of these should be ignored. all mine were literately broken off or apart. i'll post my thread on it in a minute. After you do your mounts if you still feel a shift shock then yes it's your tranny. That's why i ordered the kit. if you fix the mounts and ignore your tranny issue YOU WILL CRACK AND BREAK YOUR MOUNTS AGAIN. needless to say WASTE YOUR MONEY. check my thread "Tranny might not be your problem"

that's not entirely true. We have two electrical mounts. Front and Rear. Both the tranny mount and pass. mount don't have anything to do with electrical parts on the car.

2005 Nissan Max SE, automatic. As far as the tranny I have whatever model came in my car. I assume it's the model of the thread title.

yes you have a 5AT.

I might bail on this modd. All these places by me want 800-900 for the install of the kit. and at that point i might as well get a new Valve body

That sucks. They're ripping you off. Some quotes I got from the commercial places were like in the $400 range. The transmission guy that did mine charge the shop about $180 for labor. Your best bet is to find a local transmission shop. Keep looking. I'm not sure a rebuilt valve body would have the durable and redesigned parts that this transgo kit has and may be prone to acting up again. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the transgo kit is the way to go. If you do the level 10 and something goes wrong you are stuck back at where you started. If it happens to the one with the kit installed, you have the ability to salvage the parts and allready have the remer kit to install it in a new valvebody. I plan on doing the kit myself to save on labor and have piece of mind knowing it was done correctly. 800-900 is a rip off. Tell the next shop that quotes you that, you know a guy in Hawaii who paid 350 in labor to have his valvebody rebuilt and they didn't even have to pull the transmission to do it. Hawaii is probably one of the most expensive places in the US to live. New York and San Fran are probably the only ones with higher costs of living. you definitly pay to live in Paradise. The only reason I don't go back to the same guys is because more and likely they will send my valvebody to the mainland to get the part installed due to machining the parts. I know it doesn't make sense but that's how these guys are out here. I will just do it at a local hobby shop.
