Thnx!
It would suck but yes I would get rid of it. Ive heard about ppl spending 3-4K on tranny replacement/upgrade and most have had problems rite after. So to me its not worth it.

With the money it could potentially cost u why not just trade it in for a CVT version?

I am pretty sure the CVT's have a different tranny. The 07-08 models are still too new for people to have tranny problems. I have yet had any problems and i have not heard of anyone else having a CVT with Tranny problems.

The ECU is entirely different, which would add to the cost of the swap...at that point a 6-speed swap would be better :P.

You could always swap in the old 4AT...proven reliability, although it doesn't perform as good as the 5-speed....

^^

Electronics & software alone would be a much greater headache vs mechanical issues.

not sure how much it is to replace it in the States but it's hell expensive here bro...

as most have said, you would be better off grabbing a new max...I know it would suck b@ll$ to get rid of my max if I had an issue like that but what you gotta think about is how will the car perform after the replacement is installed...

best of luck with your decision bro....

I think before you look at the CVT, look for an alterneate higher performance option. Chance are replacing/rebuilding the one you have now will run about $3000. Just for the sake of argument, Let's say you could put the CVT in...you could pay twice if not three times the other amount. Now we're talking as much as 9000. Is your 05 really worth that much blue book?

See if there are better transmissions that could be put into that car as is, without remanufactuing the car.

my tranny went in my auto 00 max and i paid about $2300 for a rebuild. i kept the car because i paid it off about a year prior,it was well after the warranty expired unfortunitly. thankfully (knock on wood) my car has been fine after a year later. as for the cvt swap i wouldnt recommend opening up that can of worms u mite as well either try to find a sick upgraded one or rebuild the one u already have if u wont/cant get a new car.

If you are wanting to upgrade then going with a CVT Transmission is not your answer.. CVT FTL.

Hey Guys, Really there is no way to avoid money loss, For everyone saying trade it off for a new max. You wont get anything outta a car with a screwed tranny, (there is 90% chance they will check and find on trade in) and next if your getting another maxima Ya might inherit the same problem or something else just as bad. If however its a problem that isnt real evident, meaning just slips or wont shift sometimes, Ya might get lucky on trade in and it wont be detected. If you can afford to trade on a new or still warranted max then ya would be in luck. But in my case Im lucky to have a wore out max. I would check around and see what ya can get a used tranny for, I have seen engine and tranny packages go for $1000 and with only 28,000 K on them. Probably could find a tranny alone for $500 if Ya really get out looking, But make sure you verify it has the mileage claimed with VIN# or carfax, ETC. Ofcourse the installation will cost ya more than the tranny likely, but if you have had the car since it was new or near new then you know how its been cared for,and ya know what ya got. That alone means alot I have seen people who were capable of ruining a brand new car in 15,000 miles then trade it off. Most people looking to buy a car wouldnt even think about having problems outta low miles like that. Here is My advice, You do what you want to do,if your like Me I quickly grow attached to a car I like and almost see it as a family member or something. Ya wouldnt put a child up for adoption cause they broke their legs, Thats not really a very good comparison but ya get my point. Almost forgot Do You have warranty? If not just dont fool with the dealership They would rape you so bad on a tranny swap you would wanna start riding a horse for transportation. Check out mechanics in your area, and talk to people who have had work done by them, It is often the small and least expected shops that really know their stuff and treat ya with honesty. I had a 2000,Z28,Camaro needed tranny, I had a small shop rebuild it, He rode with me afterwards and We tested all the shiftpoints and such it didnt shift good and He pointed it out to Me, He ended up tearing it back down for free and fixing it. I swear that car ran better after the rebuild than when it had 30,000 miles on it,now thats odd for a rebuild. My cousin still driving that car with 175,000k on it and He burns the tires off every time He leaves a stoplight. Well just some opinions You do what you see fit,and ofcourse what ya can afford, not all of us can just go get another car. (I have never owned a new car in my life) maybe that is why Im so used to working on cars? maxman7
