Roof rust

I have an 04 with the 'mohawk' type of glass sun roof (the one that doesnt open).

Im getting rust where the metal meets the glass.

I am going to get it fixed but i am not sure if this is common.

Has anyone else had this problem??

I have gotten a few estimates on the work. I have gotten quotes from $500 to $750. That includes removing the glass, getting the rust out, repaint, and replacing the glass.

Does this pricing sound right(to those who know)?

Wow, that's odd... rust on the roof? I'd drop by the dealer and just ask if this would be covered under the rust warranty... it wouldn't hurt to ask?

Good luck either way!

Wow, same thing happened to me. But mine is rusted in four or five spots and water leaks through at the sunglasses holder area. I'm starting to hate nissan more and more.

to paint a roof should be 200-300. and getting rid of that rust will be VERY easy. as i'm sure it isn't deep. good luck.

Here is the recall information. This could have caused the rust. Fight it.

Recall Date
JUL 07, 2004

Model Affected
2004 NISSAN MAXIMA

Description
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SKYVIEW ROOFS, THE GLASS FOR THE ROOF MAY NOT HAVE BEEN QUENCHED PROPERLY AFTER THE FORMING PROCESS, RESULTING IN TEMPER IMBALANCE.

Consequence
THIS COULD CREATE EXCESSIVE INTERNAL STRESS IN THE GLASS AND EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE GLASS TO SHATTER, CREATING A RISK OF INJURY.

Remedy
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE GLASS IN THE SKYVIEW ROOF. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Potential Units Affected
32100

ok so here is an update:

I just got back from my local friendly Nissan dealership. It seems that there was a skyview recall.

The previous owner cashed in on the recall. The recall replacement was done about 30 miles from where my local dealer is.

My local dealer informed me that it was common that when the recall work was done, while cutting out the old glass, that the cars paint was getting scratched. Thus allowin water to get in and developing rust.

The manager said he would contact Nissan to get me a good will repair. And he will let me know what they say.

the quote around 500-750 sounds about right.

after getting the glass out, possibly taking the headliner out, removing the roof moldings.. painting, buffing.

i work in a bodyshop, so a quote like that sounds solid and quality. none of that $50 macco BS.

My unfriendly local Nissan dealership said they couldn't do anything about it, so I just left it alone. Guess I'll try to find a better dealership.
