When I spray starting fluid into the intake, it starts normally and runs for about 2 seconds, then stops upon using up the spray. Obviously, the engine's not getting fuel (half full tank). Background: it has done this before--always after the car hasn't been used for 2-3 weeks. However, eventually, the car has started. This time, no firing, nothing but cranking at pretty good speed (new battery last spring), despite several prolonged attempts spread over two days (with and without pumping of gas pedal). What do you think? Fuel pump? Fuel pump fuse?
sometimes if the pump wont go you can hit the bottom of the tank with a hammer while some one cranks it. sometimes it will kick start the pump and help you get to the closest service station. this only works for a short time though. i use this method at work on cars all the time and it works about 60 percent of the time

Fuel pump is NOT working, or working very sporadically. I'm a little reluctant to tap the fuel tank to kick start the pump, because with my luck, it won't do it again for a while, and the mechanic will say the pump is working. Thinking about letting the AAA tow it to the dealer so they can see for themselves what the problem is...
one other thing, our cars are fuel injected so pumping the pedal wont work. only carbureted cars benefit from pumping the gas to let a bit extra flow from the bowls to the floor of the intake to get them running in the cold or wet. there is no deirect cable link like a traditional throttle plate. a sensor is on the gas pedal that tells the computer how much your pushing it, then teh computer tells a little motor in the throttle body to open the plate a corresponding amount. over complicated i know

I am not familiar with the 6th gen security system but on the 5th gens there is a chip built into the key and if that chip isn't present or functioning the car wont start and the symptoms are the same as what you are describing.

But, it started with starting fluid. And, I tried the spare key earlier for the same reason you mention, but it didn't help.

I think the security system works by shutting off the injectors so there is still a spark but no fuel, once you introduce fuel or starter fluid in your case it fired up.
Like i said i'm not familiar with the 6th gen security system but on my 5th gen there is a security light on the dash that goes out if the correct code from the key is being received but goes solid if the wrong or no code is received.

Interesting! It's at the dealer's now with their best technician. Will advise on findings...
