whats changing the timing mean?

ok i see alot of people changing there timing now what does dat all mean? like i see timing 2 or 17 what is all dat???

I cant explain it well but soome to do with everytime the crank rotates a cyclinder fires.
You have btdc (before top dead center)and something else. By trying to increase timing you can gain power but it might not work by causing the engine to ping and detonate. Im sure someone will explain it better.

U make the spark fire 2 degrees before to center sooner than stock. Stock is 15 deg, and you can advance it to 17 without too much trouble. If you get a piggyback on to the ecu, then u can advance it until the motor explodes.

you can advance it as much as you like but the more you advance it the more ping and detonation you get. you can stop the ping with higher octane but the detonation will melt the head of the pistons over time because it creates hot spots inside the cumbustion chamber that high octane fuel wont cure. we run 40 degrees advanced timing on the race car i help with but it runs 100 and something octane

theres ignition timing, and camshaft timing. both will effect how the car runs. search around the net and you will find
