CVT and Droning?

Two weeks ago I put on a Cattman Y and a Nismo cb on my '07 and have really bad droning @ 1500-1800 rpm's which unfortunately is where it sits for in town cruising. The only other mod so far is a Fujita cai which gave me great low end torque until I added the exhuast but now have a very noticable increase in high end which is awesome and of course droning.

The only thing we can figure out is that maybe it has something to do with the CVT and it's (for lack of a better term) shift points. Others with the same setup but with a regular A/T do not seem to have this problem. Is there anyone else who has this setup and a CVT that do not have a droning issue? Also, does anyone know if it is possible to have a stealership reprogram these so called shift points?

Other than the droning I love the Nismo setup. The sound is a nice tone and sounds good at wot. Well, except for the loud drone and vibrations at low rpms.

yeah, mine has the infamous droning as well. It shakes one of my heat shield that has rusted a bit so it also rattles a bit. Kind of annoying to say the least. Both things seems to be common with are our cars.

I don't know if they will even do it even if they could. You have mods that possibly can cancel your warranty. I would check with a transmisson shop to see if this can be done.

I don't have any mods on my '08 and the CVT drones at about 70mph (my highway cruising speed) which is annoying as hell.

That's why I think it's linked to the CVT, you have an '04 - no CVT= no problems. That must be why my '07 had a resonator the size of a pontoon boat... lol

Update:
The word I got from Nissan today is that there is no way to adjust (or tweak) a CVT. CVT + Nismo exhuast = SOL...

I got an 07 as well with just the Cattman b-pipe and F5 intake and no drone. I got the Cattman y-pipe coming but Brian assured that the y-pipe causes no extra drone. The Cattman resonator is alot smaller than my stock one. My exaust sounds a little more aggressive with no drone.

Dealers suck when you go in to get something fixed. When they see any mod they are going to bust balls. Was the Nismo installed by us? He also has a cattman y-pipe and a CAI system on his car.

Yes the dealer has to prove that the mod caused the problem but they will come up with so many excuses not to pay. This has happened to members here.

lol SOOOOOOOOO true! It's so fun to see how creative they are with excuses. I brought my car in for ECM update to get CEL away and basically I paid them $60 to tell me I have an aftermarket y-pipe with no cats on them. Then I asked if I can talk to the mechanic who worked on my car because explaining the problem to them is like talking to a rock. But the dude said no, so I asked why. He said mechanics aren't suppose to talk to customers and if I have any further questions, I was suppose to ask him and not the mechanic. All they can do is read what the mechanic wrote on the paper which REALLY help understanding the problem. No more going to dealerships for my Maxima. Fun times...

See if others with the same setup have the drone, is the drone something that is canceled out by the radio or is it still way to loud

Even having Nismo parts, they will say due to the nature of what these products are for, they won't touch the car either.

IHAVEA2KMAXIMA, back in the day when the car was new and I had slightly modded it, I got them to send a mechanic out to me and we both went over the car and we had a test drive, thats when he told me about the 87 and 93 octance difference and I didn't have to pay a dime. Good dealership service, shady salesman. It all depends on location I guess, I tend to stay away from them though, just go there to show off the car and **** with the salesman.

No sound clips yet but the droning I have is way loud inside and it vibrates all the mirrors really bad. It had a slight dronish sound with the stock ex on @ those rpm's but barely noticable. Just playing around we put the factory pontoon boat sized resonator back on and drone pretty much went away along with the Nismo sound and most all of the performance benefit.. I then tried a Magnaflow res that is bigger than the Nismo and it degreased the sound and some vibration but is still high in the annoying level. I guess it's time for a bigger sound system... lol...

This may seem like a dumb question but, what does a transmission have to do with the exhaust sound. Droning is made from low engine rpm with exhaust with low or no back pressure. If you want to get rid of droning you can add a cat or put a smaller pipe somewhere in the mix or even a different muffler that creates backpressure for low end torque can help. Don't waste your time with the dealer call the muffler shop for a free inspection and they will tell you the same. I also suggest putting your transmission in D instead of tiptronic shift and listen to the exhaust during the shifting of the transmission at it's optimal points. I really don't think that will do a whole heck of alot for the droning issue but worth a shot.

The problem is when it is in "D", its not nearly as bad in the fake manual mode. The CVT doesn't actually have shift points but more like rubber band tension points.

well in D the car finds the lowest points for shifting until WOT. Lowest points means low rpm which would mean less exhaust flow/low back pressure, and more droning. If you ever looked at your exhaust before you replaced it you should have seen the pipe that is about half the size it should be. that is for back pressure and the resonator that was there before which you probably had taken out also created alot of back pressure. I recommend buying an exhaust flap to keep back pressure with a tightening spring adjustment or something. that would get rid of alot of droning and give you the low end you probably lost in changing out the exhaust.

07 Max 3.5 SL...yes I also have the ANNOYING droning at 1500-1800 RPM. Will the stealerships fix this or claim it to be normal for our Max's?

hey guys, this happens to be a common issue with our Maxima's.

A few months ago, this topic was brought up and some one posted links to download 3 PDF files discussing this issue.

You can either do a search for these PDF files or send me a PM or email and i will send you the PDF files.

I have an '05 with Nismo exhaust and experience droning too as well. My car is currently receiving a new trans so I'm driving an '08 loaner from the dealer. There's droning too around 1500 - 1800 rpm in the '08. It's just magnified in my '05 b/c of the exhaust.
