signs of clutch going bad?

i have 103,000 miles on my 2k4 6speed...what are the symptoms/signs of a clutch needing replacement? i do not know when and if the clutch was ever replaced. thanks

Go a very low speed (about 20 miles per hour) in 4th gear, then give it a lot of gas. If your RPMs fly without your speed increasing then your clutch is slipping and will need to be replaced. If you "lug" the car, then you're good and your clutch is grabbing fine.

Other than that, if it feels fine...drive it like you own it.

You may want to change your gear oil for something like redline or amsoil....but that has nothing to do with your clutch

I would not say it exactly this way, but this is correct. If you clutch is slipping (failing) when you are in a gear that is too high for the car's speed, a correctly working clutch will cause the engine to lug (and possibly even ping) and a failing clutch will slip and allow the engine to go faster than the too high gear would normally allow at that car speed. This clutch slipping will only get worse as the clutch continues to wear, so the clutch must be replaced.

With normal driving, a clutch should last at least 100 K miles. If you do a lot of shifting (heavy city driving) it is certainly possible that the clutch will wear out before 100 K miles.

I thought mine was going bad when the car stopped giving me a hard bark in 3rd gear . Turned out to be a dirty MAF (thanks alot K&N)... Back to business as usual --> 1st skirt w/smoke, 2nd skirt, 3rd skirt, on to 4th, 5th, and 6th..... Gotta Love it......

slipping when engaged is a sign that the clutch is going bad.

I heard what you can do too is while shifting gears on a non traffic road,
when making the switch see how far you have to hold the clutch down in order to switch gears.

If you can shift gears while barely holding down the pedal, it may be getting worn down,
but if you have to press it hard down to switch gears, then you should be fine still.

Thats just a thought.
My 1996 nissan altima's clutch is so bad i can switch gears without even holding the clutch down (after 1st gear)

Not a good idea because it is hard on the trannie gears and synchronizers. A much better test is to lug the engine and trannie in a higher gear -- like top gear going about 25 to 30 mph. If the engine does not lug, but speeds up, the clutch is slipping. This is much easier on your trannie than what you recommend.

if you drive it "sportingly" and the revs go are erratic when your on the gas then its slipping. also you can tell by how far the clutch pedal comes up before it engages. if it coms just about to the top then its all used up.

blackspeed: Is ur shifter shortened? I was thinking of shortening the shifter using the technique by this guy in the 5th gen forum.
