How many miles you have on your car? I had that code this past summer. My local dealership asked me the same question. At the time I had around 89,000 miles. I was told that my egr valve was getting clogged up with carbon. They usually remove it and clean it. I was quoted around $350. I try to do all of my maintenance on my car. Since I had already changed my spark plugs on my max this past summer I figued I can do this also and save me $350. From my experience if you are willing and able to change the spark plugs on a 6 gen max you can clean the egr valve. The valve does not need to be removed to be cleaned. I just removed the egr tube from the intake manafold to the valve. I would also replace the gaskets when you do this. You do not have to do this but the gaskets might get messed up when you remove the tube. Then I sprayed some carb cleaner in the valve and used a small pipe cleaner to scrape out the carbon. If you have access to compressed air use that instead of the pipe cleaner. After I did this and cleared the code from the computer I have not had and egr problem since. I currently have 99,000 miles on my max. By the way I was quoted a $450 to have my spark plugs changed.

Sorry, should have listed all that.
06, 40K miles, factory stock.
I plan on pulling the EGR valve tomorrow, and go from there. I hope it's only carbon buid up, and I have been using 87 octane while gas was outrageous so... maybe it is carbon.
How do you clear the code from the computer?
Thanks for the info!

I have a code reader. It cost me about $150. It has more than paid for itself. Also I could not take out egr valve myself - not enough room and my hands were to big. But you can take of the egr tube from the intake manafold to the valve and clean it as I described above.

Yeah I quickly found out that it wasn't gonna be easy to get to, so I changed that plan.
I may try removing just the tube like you spoke of. (Gaskets on both ends correct?)
Should have mentioned also, I had Auto Zone put it on the readed and it spit out on a P1402 code, nothing else. I'm just concearned about it possibly being the cats breaking to peaces and not carbon, I have only used 87 octane gas in it.
Thanks

SALLYMAX/Anyone:
Am considering undertaking this project this weekend.
- Any cleaning done to the actual "Tube" after removal?
- after spraying carb cleaner into valve, what next for the unscraped carbon?... just let it drain down below?
- spray and scarpe, or let sit???? more detail?
- what else is missing from your thread?
sorry, am detailed-oriented and will follow instructions step by step to get it right. if you can expand more, that will be helpful.
thanks, and i too did my own spark-plugs 2 months ago.
