Wow. There’s a lot of engineering going on in that split second. Hopefully, none of us will ever experience it from the inside. As most of us know, the Institute gave the Maxima its highest rating for frontal crashes. It is one of their “best picks.” I am always impressed with the passenger compartment strength. The roof line, floor, A, B, and C pillars all remain straight. Very cool stuff.

Ahhhh the memories....... The Maxima sure is a safe car, I am living proof!!!
For those that don't remember, or are newbies, this is head-on at 35mph (my speed) the other car, a minivan, was doing 35 as well!!

HOLY CRAP!! Thanks for the video.. Glad to see you are alright from your wreck, MO... How did it feel, besides that.. Safety wise? IT's always different unless you have been through it. Hw about the air bags? I have the side airbags too.. Let us know bro... Again glad to see how these babies play out during an accident, but sorry to see it so messed up.. LAter.

in the video from the crash test, you can see the rear view mirror just flying after the hit..

Honestly I don't know. I do know they were open before the accident.
Trust me guys, this is one hell of a safe car. One of the biggest reasons I wasn't badly hurt is the fact the footwells didn't crush at all.
Hopefully no one will go through an accident like this, but its good to know that this car will protect you from the worst.

Define badly hurt??
I remember running into a ditch at the end of a (T) intersection, about 40KPH, someone thought it would be funny to steal the stop sign. I thought it wasnt when my car was sticking out of the ditch azs up in the air and all. That was an olds and that was a hell of a steabelt burn I had on my chest. Only 40KPH.
My uncle got cut off at an intersection and to avoid the hitting a family van he swearved audi A4 out of the street into a fence and then a barn and inside the barn into a concrete divider. He still feels that one in his collar bones (SNAP). That was 60-70KPH.
Thanks,
Kam

Well, the seatbelts hurt alot as do the airbags; but those are bruises that go away in a week, I can only imagine what it would've felt like if I had hit the steering column!
The worst part was a slight hairline fracture of my tailbone.....this took about 2 months to heal and it meant not being able to sit down on anything without pain (toilet especially).
But here I am 3 months later and I don't feel any pain at all. In fact, unless I think about the accident, its like it had never happend. I am very thankful for good insurance and a safe car for allowing me to get my life back quickly.

Now that you mentioned it... Try not to stick your head out the window while crashing.

In all seriousness though, that's not the issue. Much like all these crash-test scenario's, "what if" you get hit at an odd angle that forces your head to move towards the window but just before the curtain airbags deploy to push your head back? As you'll see in the video, the side/curtain airbags deployed much later than the front bags.

Did they have to use a Onyx Max?
That video was something. As far as head on crashes go here is my Saturn after a 35 MPH head on with some dumb *** girl that cut me off. Week later I took delivery of my Max
