I just bought a new radar detector. A Silver Bullet 7500. I want to wired it to the connector that powers the rearview mirror. Anybody has any ideas as to how to do it......appreciate the help. Any recommendations? Do I need to change the fuse ???
OK.. I just did this a few days ago on my 04.
You accept full responsibility for your own actions. If you are not familiar with basic electric circuits and splicing wires, GET SOMEONE TO HELP YOU!
1. Open sunglass storage compartment and remove one Phillips screw.
2. Firmly grip the edges of the overhead light/sunroof control assembly amd pull down. You will need to do this very firmly but carefully. The unit is very tightly secured into four self locking clips, but it will come down with persistence.
3. Remove both wiring harness connectors that feed power etc to the interior light and also the sun roof controls. put the light unit aside.
4. Above the mirror is a small telescoping channel against the glass. Pull this down and put aside.
5. Unplug the mirror connector from the back of the mirror. Pull the mirror supply wire and plug back through into the hole where the light was removed from.
6. Using a razor knife of a small pair of pointed nail scissors, carefully cut the outter insulation sleeve for about two inches. Do this close to the head liner (furthest away from the plug end) Inside will be three wires. Black, Orange, and Black with red stripe.
7. Splice your detector wires to the black (negative) and Orange (Positive), and tape insulate each wire completely. Put the splices back into the sleeve, and apply more tape to close the "wound".
8. Feed the mirror wiring back to the mirror, and the detector wire to the detector, following the same original routing. Reinstall the channel, and mount your detector.
9. Reconnect the wiring connectors to the interior light unit. Reinstall the unit by carefully aligning the clips, and reinstall the phillips screw.
10. The fuse will be OK as the detector draws very little power.
I ran mine tucked under the headliner along the roof over to the a-pillar, then under the a-pillar down to the dash and then to a fuse in the fuse panel which comes on with the key.
First of all SILVER BULLET? What happened to escort or Valentine. Other than that why hard wire any radar detector that you have to mount in your window i could see if you had detector with bumper mounted sensors and a display you can mount in the window.
XMan - couldn't help but notice you are just a few minutes drive from the Virginia border. Some advice: do not even think of operating a radar detector in Virginia. They are not only against the law there, they are a pet peeve of Old Dominion smokies, who carry devices that detect radar detectors. They consider their use as an attack on them, personally.
Hi Guys...thanks a lot for the help....sure I have some work to do this weekend. Lightonthehill....thanks for the advice...I am going to Virginia on the 25th I will be doing some Autocrossing with my Max....
Any chance of you posting a pic of the finished product?

Thanks for the info. I just installed a Bel 995 radar detector and used a straight
phone cord (RJ-11) for power. After laying a large towel over the dash, I
soldered the wires together. Wrapped the bare wires with electrical tape and
sealed it with a small tie-wrap for good measure.

Redline...how did you get the wire under the a-pillar? My is very tight to the sides.
Curious, why hard wire into the mirror of the max, radars wont work will ontop of the windshield due to the max's small rear window. no rear detection radar would work right, as well as theres some dot matrix stuff which will not work well with the radar.
i just purchased a passport 8500 X50 Blue. with the hardwire kit. i was thinking or running power from behind the (alarm light) in the dash.
has anyone done this before?
or can someone post a picture of where they have it up near the mirror? i cant see any unit working well up there for 360degree's coverage

I have the Radar detector mounted just below the mirror (center of the windshield), it would have the same view through the rear as the rearview mirror. I think if you mount the Radar detector any lower there would be a lot of things in the way.
When I get a chance, I will try to post some pictures.
Not doubting that it wouldnt work. i was just never a fan of it being up that high. maybe where you have it is the place to be. i normally put the radar center of the dash up on the windshield about 6-7" up so its not in my way and perfect where i can see it, but yes please take a picture id love to see where everyone puts theres.
