My '04 makes a rack and pinion type knocking noise when going over uneven bumps. This happens especially with bumps on the right side.

Is this a common Max sound?

I have a 5th Gen , whether it makes a difference or not, i'm not sure..cause it sounds like a similar sound you're experiencing. Check this thread.. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=292857

I posted a reply as well. I've had something similar with the knocking sound. But seeing you're a 2k4.. i find it odd you have that type of sound on a new car. What's the dealer say?

Thanks for the link to the 5th gen. related problem. It contains some good tips.

I haven't been back to the dealer. I plan to poke around underneath to see if I can spot something.

It sounds like steering rack backlash to me. I'll post an update when I get it resolved.
