Rear deck rattle reducer!

Rear deck rattle reducer!
I brought my 04 Max in for the TSB "fix" for the rear deck rattle. The service guy said this was not a "fun one" to do. It must have been his first and he had to constantly refer to the Service Manual. The bottom line is that the car is now VERY quiet going over bumps and the problematic ridges in some roads that brought out that rattle. The car feels so much more solid it's unreal. In retrospect there was probably more noise coming from the rear shelf than even I realized! I be real happy now! If you have any noises like this, I definitely recommend you bring it in for this service!!

My rear deck rattled too. Heck, even the stereo could make it rattle if I turned the bass up. Two trips to the dealer- still not fixed. My wife took it the 2nd time while I was out of town and they told her, "what noise?". So I took matters into my own hands. I pulled out the CHMSL and found a gap between the plastic ribs on the underside of the deck and the sheet metal. Placed a foam pad under each rib (one left of the CHMSL and one right of the CHMSL) and problem solved. No more rattle.

Me too, what's the CHMSL? Also, does anyone know how to remove the rear package shelf? I thought my rattle was solved (it's about 90% solved) but I still here something over really bad ridges in the road. If I remove the liner from inside the trunk, I can see the speakers, but it doesn't look like you have access to much else form inside the trunk. That's why I'm wondering if the shelf can be removed from INSIDE the passenger compartment.

dude that was tedious i just finished changing my spkrs today in the rear deck you have to fold down the rear seat, unscrew the 2 visible bolts and 4 hiding behind the 2 plastic pieces where the latches are, pull that piece towards you and remove the 2 plastic pieces on both sides with your hand and lift up the rear deck
