Pinging doesn't come from the catalytic converter. It is caused by the gas prematurely igniting before the pistion reached top dead center and the spark plug ignites it. Incorrect timing advance, low octane fuel and carbon build-up on the pistons (which increases the compression ratio) are the typical causes of pre-ignition, aka pinging.
