I recommend starting with www.craigslist.org. It is free and it is localized to your area. Include all the information about the car with a lot of pictures and you will have a better chance of selling the car.

I had my car on autotrader for 2 weeks, not a single unquiry. On craigslist I get at least 1 call/email per day.

1 thing about craigslist though, you can link 4 pictures to their website, but they will come out small and crappy. I suggest linking externally and using some html to make a nice layout. Or at least a <br> tag to make new lines.

I've sold my Volvo via autotrader. I also listed on craigslist, but the only bites I got were illegitimate (we'll send you a money order for more than what you are asking for blah blah blah).

i used autotrader.com to sell my evo .. good exp. with them.. only draw back is that third party sellers get your phone number and call you well after you sell your car

i'd do craigslist for a week, and then autotrader, but don't pay for it to be in the magazine, just online. I bought my max on autotrader (from a private seller), he only posted it for a couple hours before getting 3 people calling to come and see it. I was lucky enough to get their first and buy it.

Screw both of them. Keep the max!

Between the two, I'd pick AutoTrader.
And of course, Craigslist is cool too, but too many low-life scumbag spammers and their scams.

yea this is true, plus a lot of the buyers are dealers looking to make a buck. As a result, a lot of private party saavy dont hit them up as often.

I have bought and sold 7 cars in my lifetime, all but one through craigslist.
In fact, the ONE TIME i used autotrader.com, i actually sold my car on craigslist within their 24 hour window of refund, so i got my money back.

Aside from the Nigerian scammers that cant construct a single proper sentence, you will find there are plenty of legitimate buyers. you can usually tell who they are because they include their cellphone or other contact number when replying.....

I would start with craigslist and stick with it for a few weeks or a month. then, if you are getting antsy, start with cars.com or autotrader.

IMO
Autotrader.com is by far superior to cars.com
It is a great tool to use to either get traffic towards your sale.
Better organized and user friendly
More clear and consise
More listings in general (dealer or no dealer)
More specific searches for exactly what you want.
Bottom Line.

ps. I found my current max through the site.

sold my wife's Mazda on cars.com in less than a week, and the buyer came all the way from new jersey to virginia....

I personally always browse cars.com....autotrader's layout is annoying and old-looking...

I personally like AllTheRides.com better than any of the listings that you guys talked about.

This is why:

Cars.com and AutoTrader.com are all dealer cars bent upon making a profit. Not to mention they are NOT FREE!!!!!!

Craigslist is cool but lacks the organization and is full of spam and fraud

AllTheRides.com is free and has advanced search features and fraud management.

Always use Cars.com, craigslist or ebay. Autotrader is mainly dealerships and car brokers that leave their cars up for years it seems because its free until it sells, just an absolute joke.

I've always used Autotrader or eBay. Most people I know only use the online service but the magazines in the checkout lines is also good advertisement that cars.com doesn't have.

Got my car from craiglist... seriously, from an old lady... v6 5sp, dealer serviced, nice!

Sold cars through autotrader. Had to wait a lil for honest buyers. I always list on the high side so i can cut the buyer a sweet deal... and always, ALWAYS someone calls 1 or 2 weeks later offering full price or better. So my advice is, autotrader, and hold out for the right buyer.

For non-mainstream stuff, I've seen friends do really well with ebay.

I use auto trader to sell most of the cars that I have (2 sold, 2 still 4 sale).
I use Craigslist as well but haven't sold anything with them as of yet.

Craigslist is nice and free but you get your quacks and you can't bring your ad back to the top unless you renew it. Also there should be a nationwide search available for any item. It's free as stated but if you want to expand then Autotrader. The exposure is greater and it's offered in print for those who aren't computer savvy. Yes, there are some still.
