a setting of 5 on illumina's may be too stiff for some, but you can at least try it. The way I know of bottoming out is that it feels as if you have hit the road or something, an abrupt stop(and usually a bit jarring and a unmistakeable smacking type sound). My front end bottoms out on potholes and such, but that is because I am on stock shocks up front(waiting for them to fail, didn't have enough money to get the 4 at once).
