96 Max SE Oxygen Sensor and airbag questions

Hi all forum goers..
I just bought a 96 Maxima, with 128k.. the bad thing is that it didnt pass inspection the first time. I'm in the midst of making repairs and i dont really know where to start.. I've been reading threads like crazy for the past week of so having to do with oxygen sensors and knock sensors (those are the two codes that came up with the failed inspection report) I'm looking to fix the rear oxygen sensor first, and hopefully that will somehow make the knock sensor code go away.. I ordered one of the cheap-o universal oxygen sensors off of ebay (that u need to splice the wires yourself) just so i can make the cel go off for inspection until i have enough money to buy the oem part..

But here's my question.. i've seen this chart on a few threads..

and i was wondering... is the rear sensor for a 96 maxima supposed to be accessible from the drivers side of the car without a jack? Also how many wires does it have? do the amount of wires for the rear sensor differ from the front sensors? because i removed what i thought was the rear one but from the drivers side (located under the drivers door) and it had 3 wires.. the one i bought from ebay had 4 wires (the items description said rear sensor) and when i saw that the actual sensor from the car had 3 wires i looked it up again, and it said the 3 wire sensor was the front sensor.. anyway to make a long story short i'm in the process of exchanging the 4 wire sensor for the 3 wire sensor.. Good or bad move?

I also would like to know if anyone has replaced both airbags in a 4th gen plus the module themselves.. and if it was easy or not? (basically is a mechanic is required to change the airbags?)

Thanks for the help in advance.. ..

-Joe

I had the same thing happened to me, i had a rear o2 sensor code and KS. What i did was i bought the oem o2 from oxygensensors.com for 50 bucks shipped, so no splicing wires. And the KS, i just bought an oem one off of ebay for 65 shipped. The rear o2 is pretty simple. Look underneath from the driver side and u will see it.

Keep looking, I remember a post from Tantako (sp) when he was in the same situation as you. He needed to pass emissions and he did it with a 4 wire sensor on our car. Search for his name it should come up.

I've recently swapped steering wheels and airbag in my 1995 Maxima with a 1997 Maxima. You need to make sure you fully disconnect your battery when working with the airbags though. Everything went smoothly for me. Once I put my new airbag in, I had to reset the airbag light for it to stop flashing. It's really pretty easy once you take the necessary precautions. I have heard that the passenger airbag is a pain though.

so you just switched the wheels completely? because the piece i have is the little insert into the steeringwheel that i think is held there by clips.. but i'm not sure.. and what about the airbag module? did yours need to be reset?

thanks 4 the info.. :P

High Flow Cat

If I am installing a High Flow Cat...do I just simply delete the rear O2 sensor...or will that create problems electronically. Also is it possible to create a bung after-cat for the rear sensor if this is necessary?

Eh, doing the KS isn't TOO bad if you don't mind having your hand cut up.

Post-cat, if you're fed spec.

Is there a trick to disconnecting the O2 sensor from the plug that goes to the computer? Mine are extremely tight and I'm struggling to get the plugs apart. Also, is it OK to use dielectric grease when replacing an O2 Sensor?

I would put some miles on the car with the new O2 sensor before replacing the KS. The change in mixture will certainly affect whether the engines knocks or not. I am always trying to get away with replacing the fewest number of parts but have a fully-functioning car with no CELs. It is normal for a single problem to cause more than one code and though I can't think of how a bad KS could affect the O2 sensor I can imagine the opposite to be true.
