BTW I agree wholeheartedly with the opinions in this thread of the 4th gen Maxima being way more reliable than the 5th gen, although once I got some bugs out of the system I believe my 02 GLE is pretty nice with no real serious issues (yet.)

Do the coolant bypass. It will fry the ECU.

Not true. 3.5s (5.5 gen) are stupid reliable...as long as you delete the precats. Sure, they'll still likely to burn oil thanks to valve stem seals, but the only thing you have to worry about is cam/crank/maf sensors. Once replaced, then you're golden.

l will argue it's more than just cats. The 3.5 is a great motor except for the lousy oil galley gaskets in the timing cover. The cats are more likely to cause problems which slowly develop over time, but the oil galley gaskets will destroy the motor without warning.

The 04-06 era also had those awful timing tensioner issues. I get why people love the 3.0

Absolutely more than just the cats (which you shouldn't have to do anything about anyway to prove reliability of a car.)
Here's why I say the 4th gen is more reliable, in so many words:

That was on my 99 Maxima before I sold it-- without having to do ANYTHING except regular upkeep- no "deleting precats" or whatever.

I've never EVER seen a 5th gen with anything like that mileage.

Yeah, 6th gen max is garbage lol. I meant the 5.5s. Too bad the 2nd gen DE, HR and 3.7 had the gasket problems till 2013. 3.7 really is great.

You know what's interesting, though? The ****ty chain guides are only relegated to the FWD platform. None of the RWDs suffer from it except the VQ40 (and people have found that running real syn oil aka group IV/V in those doesn't cause wear on the guides).

Was voted the most reliable car of the 90's regardless of price.

But the'll never see that kind of miles up here, rad support will rust out and drop the engine around 130K ,5th gens too.

Lol, is there some sort of factual basis for that? Or is that opinion based purely on the fact that you own a 3.0 and not a 3.5?
I agree a had a 3.5 in my 96 maxima 5 speed . ran 12.72 108.33 in the 1/4 mile. On mickey Thompson slicks. I would drop the clutch at 5500rpm I did 100's of passes .drove like fast and furious.Never went through a axle.

I think lowering a max, either through coil overs, motor mounts broken ,suspension broke will blow axles.

My car was 2-3 inches higher than stock, with zip ties on the springs.

True. After my first radiator support rusted out and was replaced I was a little more intentional about getting the car washed after the snow and salt cleared up. That road salt is a killer.

The 02 I have right now is giving me headaches having to fix one thing after another...
I'm thinking about seeing if I might can grab this 97 5-speed for around $850 or so and sell my 5.5 gen for about $2400

That car is in great shape! You would hate New York cars. It's like bolts are welded on . Any project is many broken bolts and stuck stuff.

I went and looked at it today- it drove really great absolutely zero complaints there. The engine was rebuilt recently and only has about 50k miles on it and TBH it drove like it, Shifted very smoothly and got up and went. I was serious impressed. But...
Why can't people just take care of their damn cars?? It ain't rocket science. Take a real close look at that second photo above, look directly under the rear passenger side door, you will see a nice rust hole in the rocker panel all the way through the metal. There's another one too back in the bottom part of the rear quarter panel the picture makes it just look like a dark spot but it's a rust hole completely through.
The only other real problem I had with the car was the AC didn't blow cold. It could just need to be recharged but when it stopped blowing cold in my 99 it was more serious than that--that was the most expensive job I ever had to get fixed on my 99 so I have some concerns about that. Some other minor cosmetic issues both interior and exterior that I could live with... tough decision as it drives fantastic.
