2002 Max Engine Ping question AT 3.5

I know this has been talked about here many times but has anyone figuried out how to rid engine ping at low speeds? I hear it loud the hotter the temps get outside and only around 1500 RPM under hard load you never hear it!! The car runs 100% full power idles perfect cant even hear it running..The ping is driving me nuts! Its not a knock or chains or belts its engine PING under slight load around 40mph as if i was running the car on 86 octane..MAF sensor good plugs coils no codes runs 100% any ideas? No Vac leaks.. I use 91 Octane and when i use 87 octane I hear the same ping.. Thanks for any ideas.. Mark

It's normal, b/c ign timing is very high stock down low.

It can be tuned out with a reflash.

I can attest that although these cars will run on regular they don't like it. You could get datascan 2 and knock the timing back 2° but in reality both 2k1 gle and my 2k 5 speed use more fuel, run worse, not to mention cost me more due to the fuel consumption especially in the gle (auto). I have a legit non ethanol station right down the street from my house that sells Supreme no ethanol and let me tell you how big of a difference. I never wrote down any figures but I assure you it's costing you more to run cheap gas. The 5 speed didn't mind so much. I put one tank of regular in it one time and only twice in the gle. Lesson learned. I actually have datascan 2 and the timing advanced 2° on Glee. Project 5 speed is currently taken apart in project mode and may officially be down for the entirety of my plans... So no timing mods on it.

You need to install a PCV oil catch can. In high mileage VQ35 DE engine burn oil due to failure of secondary piston ring and clogged precat. The PCV valve throw out blowby oil instead of condensation and emission gas contaminating the intake manifold lowering the fuel octane level that cause pinging or spark knock between 25-40 miles speed.

I recommend AD W1 catch can, you can buy it in ebay or amazon. To install it
PCV valve (firewall passenger side : on top of the rear valve cover)> PCV 3/8 tubing> IN of PCV oil catch can. Out of PCV catch can> PCV 3/8 tubing >nipple of intake manifold. Do not use fuel or transmission tubing it collapses at high rpm. Buy the PCV tubing at Advance Autoparts. Use Techron Fuel Injector Cleaner. I highly recommend to gut the two precat and install 02 nonfouler to the two secondary 02 sensor or replaced both precat. Goodluck

Thank everyone the catch can idea sounds good but it doesnt explain why the pinging is only when its hot outside--On cool days i never hear the ping! When the temp starts getting into the mid 90s here in AZ i hear the ping (After the eng in at norm oper temp)

B/c it's physics. That's what heat does (preignition or detonation). Which one your issue is...idk lol.

Try 1 step colder plugs and cleaning the pistons/valves. You probably have a ton of carbon build up from age and oil burning. If it still happens, then it's detonation, and only reducing ignition timing will fix it, which is quite normal on a lot of VQs. You could use car gauge pro and reduce the timing by 2 degrees and see if that's enough to help. I would think the least likely problem is the knock sensor not detecting it.

Or you can do a PCV delete like this. I unplugged both PCV breather hoses & ordered the intake without one. Later I put a longer hose on the front valve cover breather to dump the fumes under the car.
