Cam sensor

My 02 auto is having a weird drivability issue. Hard starts in the morning or after the car cools down. Starts fine once car has warmed up. When launching from first, car hesitates bad between 3500-4000 kind of like a stutter. Then it is very sluggish to redline. Doesn’t pull hard from 4-6 and sometimes will early shift at 5000 but not very often. Transmission is shifting good as it was replaced 5k miles ago. Just replaced plugs, and a bad o2 sensor. But the problem was before I replaced them. Currently has two codes. P0420, and p0462. Used a bore scope on the front cat and it wasn’t clogged very badly but somewhat clogged. Cleaned the MAF and tried another OEM MAF but no difference. Any input is appreciated. Going to test cam position sensors in a few days. Thanks!

sounds like you are on the right track. get your codes fixed... and start debating what to do with your cats if u want to keep the car. ( i dont know ur codes, but guessing cat related since you followed up w cats right after listing the code numbers)

cam sensor issues for me were, only idle like stalls, or stalls literally while driving but cruising (rolling with no throttle), at the very end it had caused really bad idle problems but that was literally on the way to the shop w the new sensors in hand.

I think you might have one or more bad ignition coils. I had those symptoms when i had a bad coil. For a cam sensor, you will get hard starting when warm, and random stalling which is dangerous. Do you have any spare coils to swap?

I have a couple coils off of my old 3.0, happen to know if they will work? I have access to a O-scope, so I will hookup to each coil and test them. As well has a resistance test.

Would a coil going bad cause hard starts when it has been sitting over night? I’ll look up the coil resistance spec and see what I can find. Thanks for the reply’s.

I'd also look in the direction of the TPS and the IAT (intake air temperature sensor)

I have an 02, the IAT is built into the MAF, and the it has fly by wire throttle so no TPS testing without a scan tool. But I did happen to take a look at the TPS signals, and all reference sensors had no drop off of voltage.
