'03 Maxima excessive fuel consumption

Not sure where the temperature gauge position should be for normal operating temp. but it's a notch and a half below half way so it seams like the car is running cold, this could contribute to the excessive fuel consumption.
I am therefore looking to replace the thermostat, but it comes with a aluminum housing, is that necessary?

thermostat or possibly the coolant temperature sensor is bad thinking its cold and dumping in more fuel. thermostat is usually the more common culprit and the easiest spot to start

The upstream oxygen sensors can also kill gas mileage.

MAF will not a throw a code unless it's blown.

OP I have an 03 and my temp gauge reads the same as yours so unless your throwing a P0128 code I would think your high fuel consumption is do to faultering O2 sensor, (although lead foot would do it) jack rabbit launches from traffic lights or generally poor driving habits. Improper tire inflation will also increase your fuel usage ... just a few thoughts.
