how do I top off manual transmission fluid

You can swap out axles and only lose a small amount of fluid.
Op: Go to Harbor Freight or w/e your cheapest store is with auto stuff. Get the fluid pump that screws onto bottles. Then, just remove the fill plug and pump it in until it's full. Have the car level and stop when it starts coming out.
If it's brown, I would just change it all out since it's only 3 qts and you can get some good stuff for 7-10 bucks/qt.

Negative. The tranny won't drain itself if everything is in good condition. It will seep or trickle out on a manual. The autos seem to behave differently.

I love Menards, too. I bought brake cleaner for 2.49/can and r134 for 5 bucks/can! 4 bottle pack of the gourmet root beer for 2.50! I'm spending so much money, I'm losing my mind!
